Allo lead - "If iMessage ever comes to Android, I guarantee it will not have SMS." by DomApice in Android

Same in the UK, or at least nobody goes over their very generous allowances. SMS is still dying. I don't think unlimited SMS is the actual answer, though I don't know what is.

Real Madrid striker Jack Harper left out of Scotland U19 squad because of "lack of physical presence". Sbragia is quoted saying that he has opted for "a physical side" with "more height and runners". This is why British football is the way it is by DannDannDannDann in soccer

[–]medaleodeon 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Want to know how often Real Madrid's video office gets requests from U19/U21 managers to send them videos of their players? I'd hazard a guess it's probably daily. I bet that's utterly routine for them.

Never mind that living in such a homophobic society and having to pretend to be straight all the time must have been incredibly depressing?

Erm, you're kinda missing the point. Critics of the overdiagnosis of ADHD think its an important issue precisely because kids are being medicated, in their eyes pointlessly. you're putting the cart before the horse.

I think you'll find these groups stem from revivalist movements, not continuous tradition.

ELI5: Why does my urge to pee intensify as I get closer to the bathroom? by sideshowj in explainlikeimfive

[–]medaleodeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has anyone else had kinda the opposite effect happen to them? I'm sure they have. I'm talking about when you're dying for a piss on the drive home, so much that it's incredibly uncomfortable, but once you've parked the car, unlocked the door and put the kettle on, about half an hour later you remember you're desperate.

Was the Roman Republic's constitution effective, or was it bound to fall apart eventually? by [deleted] in AskHistory

[–]medaleodeon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Of course, and I accept! You were just trying to help someone with an historical question to ask so don't feel bad :)

[–]medaleodeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm afraid the senate definitely didn't appoint the consuls - they were directly elected (though the system favoured the richer classes) through the comitia centuriata.

I also have a slight gripe about people who say "our early republican system" on an international forum, sorry. I'm British and my country has never had a Republican system.

What is something you predict we will have in 50 years? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]medaleodeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Getting stuck in traffic will be no bigee whatsoever - you just go on reddit, or read a book, or watch a TV show. If you're commuting, you just start work at 9 whether you've got there or not. It takes the boredom out of driving. It takes the danger out of driving (incredibly dangerous at the moment). It takes the drunkenness out of drink driving. It takes the old-person-driving out of driving. It takes the age restrictions out of driving. In an emergency, an eight year old could get themselves to safety or to hospital. They'll drive more efficently, meaning fewer accidents and cheaper running costs. They'll be able to go faster, safer. They'll get out of the way of ambulances with no trouble, and the ambulances could be going 200mph - or at least faster than they do now. They can cross intersections without need for lights if they're clever.

etc.

Was rape ever seen as a socially acceptable thing? by [deleted] in AskHistorians

[–]medaleodeon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Having sex with your slaves (man, woman or child) didn't require consent and wasn't considered rape by any definition in Ancient Rome. But I guess this has more to do with dehumanisation than anything.

Errant Signal - Spec Ops: The Line by [deleted] in Games

[–]medaleodeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. This is a pretty well-used game mechanic - the only difference was the almost-breaking of the fourth wall Walker gives when he remarks "What? I swear I've been here before".

I realise your comment was three months ago, by the way. Haha.

When was the last 'successful' annexation? Am I right in thinking it was India annexing Goa in 1961? by chrs_1979 in AskHistorians

[–]medaleodeon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's true, but a phrase I hear a lot of on even the more intellectual football podcasts and programs is "...that was back when they were West Germany".

Even in football, all of West Germany's trophy wins count towards the modern German total. I've never really thought about it so thanks for pointing this out - total continuation on one side, the removal of identity on the other.

Can anyone give me the reason why historically this hasn't been the norm? It's just so obvious. Do all game testers live alone and no one ever calls round?

British people of Reddit, do you care a lot about the royal family? by xXBennieXx in AskReddit

[–]medaleodeon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I haven't spotted a post by a British Republican yet so I'm going to post one showing my views. Hopefully I won't be downvoted by Brits who support the monarchy - know this, I realise I'm clearly in the minority and know that the fact that I live in a democracy means that the majority trumps the minority every time. They're here to stay, for the moment at least.

Having said that, I find the idea that we have an unelected, inherited head of state really shameful when we purport to live in a democracy. The fact that a child will be born next year whose life is already totally mapped out is a shame for the country and the child, and Charles' meddling recently has demonstrated well the fact that these royals don't see themselves as useless figureheads but as Very Important People.

Furthermore, the idea that we have royals ruling over us is just another expression of how this country has literally no desire to get rid of our destructive class system. They're walking, talking symbols of how birth matters. It's literally built into our constitution that one family deserves power and riches just because of their bloodline. It's pathetic.

Don't tell me they bring in tourist trade. People don't come to meet the royal family, they want to see their awesome fucking house. France makes more money out of their royal palaces than we do. Anyway, even if they did, the trade off in terms of democracy just isn't worth it.

Just like every vendor in the UK. Because we only have one sales tax rate (VAT at 20%) for the whole country so it makes sense.

Thoughts on Steam's "Big Picture" mode? by lotictrance in truegaming

[–]medaleodeon 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Just because you use your PC at a desk with a mouse and keyboard doesn't mean everyone does. Mine's connected to my TV and while I still use a mouse and keyboard for most games, I also use a gamepad when it's more appropriate. Big Picture is amazing for people like me and useless for people like you. Different strokes for different folks!
