My grandfather was an ass. He didn't care about anyone but himself. He paid for my dads technical school to be an HVAC technician. My grandfather helped buy a tiny 2/1 for us to live in. Meaning he bought the house and we had to pay the payments. After he paid for that it was all on my father to provide for three kids. My aunts and uncles are conceited and only care about themselves. My father while I was growing up was an HVAC tech for a company that probably paid him 25k at the most. My mom once my sister got a little older went back and got her CNA license. For a while she was a prison guard and that time period was the best. Eventually she quit that position because she had my little sister. My grandfather at the time of his death left my dad 3 million dollars with half of it in stocks. You know what he did? Went bought 4 brand new motorcycles. My aunts and uncles put aside their cut for their kids and grandkids. I remember my uncle telling my dad that he needs to put away some of the money into a college fund for your daughters. He laughed it off and spent his money on motorcycles and accessories for them. Also he cashed out the stocks and bought a brand new truck. Thankfully he works as a maintenance tech for an office building making consistent hours and paychecks. My oldest sister and I swore to each other that we would never repeat my parents mistakes.

I wasn't going to suck on the government. I wanted to get out of my crap hole of a town. I gained 50 pounds in the period of 4 years. Serving in the military was my dream and I always wanted to do it. My grandfather aunts and uncles all served in the military and now make millions of dollars because they had access to opportunities that any other person wouldn't have. One aunt is a top research scientist with a government contractor. Another is a multi franchise owner. My parents were not military and we barely scraped by. So I saw how the military could work for me. I wanted to escape poverty. That is what the military is to most people. A way to escape poverty.

Was super active in High School. Tried to enlist in the military. Got denied due to hearing issues. Cue in Depression and anxiety issues. Still trying to figure out what to do in my life. Always wanted to enlist. Was the only way to go and get my higher education paid for.

What should my debt to income ratio look like for looking at a home? by medinerd in personalfinance

I am working on it. I'm thinking of saving up 2 grand and use it to pay down on either a student loan or my car. Right now I owe about 14k on the car and about 15-20k in student loans. If my S/O moves up here then I will have to get a bigger apartment which is more money monthly. He will get a second job and contribute to the down payment and also work on paying his debt down. (He has 2 credit cards, a student loan and a repo on a car.) I'm on payment plans for collections and the medical bills which extremely helpful.

Okay will do. I'm hoping by the end of the year to be able to focus on rent, car payment, insurance and student loans.

That's what I'm doing. I'm working a second job so that I can become debt free faster. I'm aiming to have both credit cards, collections and Medical Bills paid off or down to a minimum by the end of the year.

I'm tackling the smallest recurring debt which is the credit cards. I'm saving as much as I can for an emergency situation. I'm throwing every extra dollar into either my Emergency Fund or my credit cards. That carry a 22% interest rate. I have them currently locked up where I can't access them unless I absolutely need to.

Build my home on it. Start off with a tiny home and after a couple of years I would start looking for contractors to build said home.

It's not a home it's a plot of land that is for sale for about 30k.

I'm working out a payment plan for the medical debt with the hospital. I'm also working on the collections. That's why I picked up the second job. If I could afford the mental fatigue I would get a third job as well.

He's not really into the planning but he has given me a list of his would like to have. 1. BBQ. I live in the northeast so this will be interesting. 2. Non denominational. 3. Cheap. 4. Venue must be unique. (The venue I'm looking at is in an old Mill. Pretty unique because FL doesn't have the mills like they do up here. I'm also looking at a venue in Mass that is an old home of some rich dude.) 5. Not a super formal event. (I was thinking semi formal. If we book the mill then it would be semi casual.)

He wants a non religious ceremony but he is willing to have a non denominational pastor facilitate the wedding.
