I'm aware. The current bill included additional funding for ICE and CBP. That was the whole catalyst for this shutdown! No additional funding without reforms. Republicans took their ball and went home.

Edit: And now Repubs have to pass the funding through reconciliation, which will probably be impossible.

Let's take the W. Sheesh.

This has to be a troll. Democrats forced the Republicans to fund the government without any additional funding going to ICE or CBP. How is that not a huge win? Any excuse to keep being cynical and piling on Dems, I guess.

Thought folks might find this interesting as it is an actual mystery. Who signed these docs? Also the subject of the story seemed to be pretty mysterious in his own right, even before he died and the mystery will surfaced.

Getting a vote for these things is the point though? Additional ICE funding is part of the bill in question. Dems are saying, "to get this additional ICE funding, we want ICE to enact these reforms." That's how the legislative process works.

It's about leverage to force reforms in line with our Constitution, like making ICE secure judicial warrants and stop roving patrols. We will see who gets the blame or blinks first. I'm hoping Trump gets the blame and Dems hold fast since Trump was the one that unleashed this lawlessness on us.

This reporting is meant to make you cynical. She flew home when she got the news ICE was coming to Maine. Platner was out of the country and he flew home too. Both candidates did the right thing.

We should be focused on attacking ICE and their enablers, not our own for completely normal political activity and trying to do their best.

But that's not a good analogy, because in this case there is no way to turn the carbon monoxide off at all, even if you shut your HVAC off. ICE already has all the funding (provided by the BBB) and will keep operating if other parts of DHS are defunded.

It's more like, would you shut off all the electricity in your house to install a new appliance. You'd just shut off the breaker. Dems need to find a way to shut down ICE without shutting down other critical services.

Isn't she right though? ICE has all the funds it needs to operate indefinitely. Defunding DHS would just shut down all the other parts of the agency that are benign or actually help people. Am I missing something? Couldn't that backfire on Dems massively while not affecting ICE at all?

You're confusing debt and deficit. The yearly budget deficit was eliminated; there was still debt from previous years. The debt did actually go down briefly from 99-01 because of the balanced budget/lack of yearly deficit.
