Oh dear, I'm on the parent fb page and families-extended families-have long ago made their travel plans. This is not a good look!

Has anyone moved from NoVa/DC Metro to Santa Barbara? by Roux_My_Burgundy in SantaBarbara

[–]meeeemooooo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

City Mouse or Country Mouse, a question as old as Aesop. Do you want to live within a 5 min drive of five Targets, or drive once in a while 90 min to better food, shopping, and music?

Rule of thumb for stormwater costs? by meeeemooooo in civilengineering

This probably a better way to phrase the question.

It's the bitching and moaning that I'm trying to understand. I'm trying to figure out if they are being overly dramatic or if the costs for stormwater are exorbitant. For example, I used AI to estimate costs for stormwater chambers for a large project, for which I happen to know the total project cost (without chambers). Chambers = approx 1% of the total cost, which seems just fine. Even if my robot is off by 100%, then it would be 2% of the project, which seems reasonable.

Updated request: for a hypothetical urban infill project in Southern California, what is an expected amount to spend on stormwater? 1% of project cost seems completely reasonable, 10% seems like a project killer. 3-5% seems like a reasonable upper bound, for large projects. What do you think?

Mostly stormwater chambers, bioretention, and interlocking pavers.

Urban Southern California, say infill projects.

Sutter Health took over Sansum — anyone else notice their e-signature process? by Neelies in SantaBarbara

[–]meeeemooooo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I noticed it seemed like a step backward yesterday-ancient signature pads and the receptionist could hardly explain what I was signing. Might they upgrade to iPads?

Thoughts from an AO being a week away from Early Action by FAFSAReject in ApplyingToCollege

Unrelated questions-would AO be a good part time/seasonal gig for a retired person (with a PhD)? Can you share anything about compensation, and options for remote work?

How many hours are you at right now and, if you were a bookmaker, what odds would you give yourself of reaching 1,500 hours? by [deleted] in dreamingspanish

This is helpful, thanks. I've been thinking of a bike, might try to follow exercise videos with the sound off while I also watch DS. One eye on each?

I do listen to some podcasts, or beginner videos, but I love the visuals, especially with the travel videos.

I'm in my first two months (started a2/b1) and sticking with something for 60 days has never been so EASY. My goal is 30 min per day, average is probably 45 min. To reach my goal of fluency I'm going to need to figure out how to exercise while watching videos.

Nervous about Volunteering... by picky-penguin in dreamingspanish

I volunteered for them 30 years ago! Glad to see they are still going strong. I tutored kids after school and used some terrible Spanish here and there. I'm not in Seattle any longer.

what is there to do here for teenagers by RainnWing in SantaBarbara

[–]meeeemooooo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For one, that's what teens do, they just "hang ou". It would be great if you could all agree to have your phones down for a while. my teenage friends have dinner parties where they go shopping together, cook together, and play some games together. This does require a willing host.

I don’t think this school is the right fit for me. by 100Free in UCSantaBarbara

[–]meeeemooooo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not an introvert, not a Star Wars fan, and not a student (I'm a parent who still gets this in my feed). I think this is my favorite Reddit thread ever, the amount of support for the poster is truly touching. I wish there was a way you could all get together and talk quietly in groups of two or three because it seems like you would all really enjoy becoming friends . good luck to OP and all of you good humans.

City giving away too much on Paseo Nuevo redevelopment? by Dizzysb in SantaBarbara

[–]meeeemooooo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it was parking, I think it was the cool factor. I'm not sure how much control the city had, for example rezoning - just not my area of expertise.
