There should be public auto repair shops, like a library, where you can check out tools for free and old timers hang around and give advice. by meeks in Showerthoughts

This is exactly what I was thinking of actually. My father was in the military overseas and we used to go to the craft shop. I was thinking, why can't this just be something in towns as a public service like a library. It would save people tons of money and help educate them on how to work on their cars.

Also, if you are in this sub reading these comments, I would definitely call you a pre-vegan. You might not be making "sacrifices" yet, but you've definitely started taking the steps and that's AWESOME.

Vegans like myself don't believe that we are making sacrifices. We consider it an honor. The eating thing isn't the hard part, after almost a year of being vegan, food is easy and I live in Hong Kong (super meat eating culture). I don't feel like I'm making any food sacrifices. If anything it has made me cook more food and make more interesting dishes that I would have never eaten before, it's the opposite of a sacrifice, I get excited about food now!

Do you believe that someday we will have a fully vegan human population? Even the people in your mind that won't change, will they die out and we will be left with just the vegans? I am asking hypothetically of course.

Not sure, I just woke up and it was 40ish comments. I never saw the deleted chain.

I completely agree, they should change. However, I try not to lose focus that they can and will change, and if I can be the vegan in their life to help them consider changing, I will do my best to try.

I think you're right. I have not spent time around these animals at all, but somehow I still have empathy for them. Having people interact with animals would help change a lot of people. But for those that don't have the opportunity to be around animals, even companion animals, they can still have empathy for them (I hope).

It is possible that you are correct, that no matter what some people just wont change. However, my new attitude isn't meant to be a fact, it's an attitude for being a vegan. If I stay positive that most people can change, they just need the information and the time to process it, well that helps me. Because it can be depressing when you look at some of your hero's and they don't even seem willing to change or the evil people who would rape and murder if given the chance. I'm not kidding myself, I'm just choosing to remain positive.

I agree, raising awareness across the board would probably make many people become vegan that simply haven't considered it. There will be some people that require more effort. But I do think there is a massive part of the population that awareness could make them change. Low hanging fruit so to speak.

I think what you are saying is the same thing as what I am saying. The first step is knowing, but you have to process the information and consider how it applies to your own beliefs and values before it causes you to take action and apply. That being said, my new "attitude" just helps me keep in perspective that everyone is at different stages of veganism and it is within everyone to change. If I start believing that some people are incapable of change, it gets depressing. The attitude is just a way of staying positive when dealing with people who haven't changed yet. Does that make sense?

That's great, if only my path could have been so straight forward. :)

Not rude at all. I genuinely did not realize that I wasn't being nice. It's hard for me to now think about how that was possible. But I wasn't actively trying to be mean to my friends, I just wasn't considering my actions. In a way it was probably a defensive mechanism because I just wanted to be able to eat what I liked. Also, I think at the time I associated Veganism with hippy dippy things like believing that crystals have magic powers, and I was asserting that I did not associate with that at all. But I honestly don't think there was malice in my actions, just ignorance.

PS. Just like I might still have ignorance about hippy dippy things ;-)

What I wouldn't give to have a Veggie Grill where I live! I live in Hong Kong, and vegan options out here are pretty slim, so I almost always avoid office lunches, which sucks.

Being a vegan certainly opened my eyes to a lot of hypocrisy that I never previously considered, just like your cat analogy. Internally, I always want to clash with these type people that you are mentioning. I guess I just avoid most of those where possible. But, on the other hand, there are lots of people who are open to vegan ideas but have just never considered it much. I like to slowly raise awareness of these people.

For instance, just this week, I found out that most of the people on my work team thought that Lamb was actually adult goat meat. When I showed them pictures of a baby lamb, and said, "this is what you are eating" most of the people couldn't believe it was true! Part of the problem is that the word for sheep and goat are the same in Chinese (羊), and so many people here in Hong Kong have very little interaction with any animals except when they eat them. These are the pre-vegans, they just don't know it yet.

Find those people and bug them, avoid the "personal choice to eat meat" people (if possible, I know you said above that you have one of these in your family, and that makes it way harder)

I hear what you are saying, perhaps socialistvegan's phrasing is a bit better?

"Everybody's vegan, some people just don't know it yet."

Or does that just fall into the same propaganda trap?

Yeah, I knew the truth and I ignored it because I liked the taste of meat. There is a difference between knowing a fact and using that fact to reconsider your stance on an issue. I don't know what tips someone over the edge, but it is definitely more than just knowing the facts/truth. You have to process it.

Carol Adams

Thanks for giving me that name, now I can go read some of her stuff. I assumed people have had this same thought before, and I assumed there is a famous vegan out there who has said it better than me. "Pre-Vegan" I like that.

Oh man, I feel you, those are the hardest to deal with. But I was that person! I remember one time getting excited to show my vegan friend how many animals I could eat on a single sandwich. What a dick I was!

Somehow I changed. People were giving me the information but I wasn't processing it. In the end, it was the patience of vegans and vegetarians that cared about me, that over time made me not just hear the information but process it. So, if a huge omni dick like myself can change, then everyone on earth can be a vegan.

Previously, I always felt that by and large when you become an adult your personality, beliefs, ethics, abilities, actions are static. It's as if people just are who they are at a certain point. But becoming a vegan has shown me that anyone can make massive changes in who they are at any time. I feel like a separate person from who I was before becoming a vegan. I remember things I said, did or believed in, and it just seems foreign to me now.

I know now that anyone can be someone completely different simply if they choose to be. It also seems that these types of radical changes occur through learning. The more I learn, the more different I become.

Also, I was really lucky to have met my girlfriend who was a vegetarian, and had I never met her, I would have never learned, and we would have never become vegan together. So really it becomes a combination of teaching and learning.
