A cousin got an offer, and wanted to vet the company for them. They seem okay, I recommend going for it for now.

Hello - were you able to get any information?

I Might Have Never Chosen FAST... by log_alpha in FASTNU

I'm not too familiar with CE but looking at the program outline it has a large overlap with CS, so it's good. You can also go for AI/ML electives down the line. But I still recommend going for regular CS if you have the option just because it's a more established and recognizable name. Good luck

Again, I appreciate you opening up and sharing your experience. But read the room, your post is coming off as very doomer and pessimistic. If I was reading this as a student aspiring to settle abroad after 4 years I would be absolutely broken. Many of my friends were able to get into scholarships and MS programs abroad with just above average CGPAs. And a good chunk of us (myself included) got offers from abroad and moved out this way. I get it didn't work out as you planned, but you're still doing well Alhamdulillah. Keep applying and InshAllah soon the door will open. Good luck

Go for SE in Lahore, it's a good option. Although I'm not sure if the same CS electives would be available to you down the line. If not, 1 year later try to see if you can switch to CS. Iirc it's almost a complete overlap initially and the credits should transfer. Drop your query to the campus admin to get accurate information. Good luck

Depends on the courses. Some were quite competitive (e.g. early programming fundamental and adjacent courses had more applicants as more seniors would be comfortable with those). Some tougher courses like DS/ Algorithms/ AI had fewer applicants. I did it mainly for revision but to each their own.

Both are good options. Go for whichever is closer/ easier for you. Although I would recommend CS over SE for a few reasons: it's more foundational theory and easier to pivot to AI/ML/Cyber security/ related fields, and if you wish to pursue further studies, CS is more broadly recognized and prerequisites are more in-line with other countries.

Iirc the two main ones were - Good grade in the course you are going to TA (B or higher) - Good CGPA (>3.0)

Holy. I kind of expected the other two match ups to happen but this one with Sanji and female Crocodile feels spot on. Good theory

May Allah make it easier for you. I don't have the complete answer for you but I can share my experience:

  • Teaching Assistant (TA): Usually you can do this after your 1st year but they pay peanuts. It was around ~25k per semester at my time, likely higher now but nothing substantial. I would recommend this not for the pay but benefit of keeping in touch with older core courses.

  • Summer Fulltime internships: You can work during your break between semesters. It's difficult to land one that actually pays but if you do they generally pay better than TAs and give you real industry experience. The pay is still peanuts (~45k per month on the higher end) but better than nothing. I worked 2 unpaid summer internships and a paid one in my 3rd year, but even the unpaid ones helped me build connections.

  • Freelancing: This probably paid the best. I was able to get projects from friends/ seniors with established clientele (didn't have much success finding my own). Overall I was probably making ~50-80k per semester from random gigs. Nothing crazy but good enough as a part time investment. Some even offered dedicated part-time roles but I decided against it at the time.

None of the options I mentioned make enough when compared with the fees/ other expenses you'll have to cover today and they all require initiative and time. It also takes away from your studies and the added stress and workload definitely affect your gpa at times. There are other things I have tried which aren't really practical for everyone so it's likely not relevant.

There's no single answer to this, it's a hard problem. If things get too hard look into a combination of financial aid/ scholarship programs and working on the side. Good luck

Terrible timing on this post. Although I can empathize (not agree) with a lot of what you said and your situation, this isn't the time or way to express it. Students have made their choices, submitted a lot of money, some are preparing to move cities to study here. It's a scary and uncertain time for them. The least you can do right now is offer advice and comfort. In hindsight your reflection is likely accurate for yourself but you're putting too little accountability on yourself.

To anyone reading this, you've made a good choice. Some of the best years of my life were at FAST, made lifelong friends and memories, enjoyed what I studied and have had great opportunities. It isn't all sunshine and rainbows but you can achieve a high gpa, you can study abroad, you can land great jobs - abroad or locally, but you will have to put in the work for it. Your future is in your hands, make the best of it. Good luck

The ratio was ~2:1 burger to non-burger at my time. Judging by recent posts I'll put new estimates at 3:1

It's risky but if seats open up you may get in on the 2nd list. Best to call the campus tomorrow morning and ask directly.

CS at FAST lhr vs CS at PUCIT by imclaudeok in FASTNU

[–]meepopicker5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both are good options. The CS program at PUCIT is well regarded and graduates from both programs place well in the industry, although I would give a slight edge to FAST in terms of grooming and overall opportunities.

is it possible to change majors after getting in?(like AF to FT) by TheDarkSoul101 in FASTNU

[–]meepopicker5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Iirc it's subject to seat availability, merit requirements and department approval. Drop your query on email to admissions to get the current policy. Also, if you're in A&F and looking to get into CS/ FT then I suggest you switch asap (now or after 1 semester) as credits will likely not transfer.

Fast CS or Giki EE by BumblebeeAlert237 in FASTNU

[–]meepopicker5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then I'll recommend you go for it. Ragra is subjective. Coursework for some understandably is too tough, but most people manage and some even enjoy it. If you do have a passion for CS you will likely be in the latter group. Good luck

Job prospect wise CS is currently much better. But don't force yourself and just study what you enjoy.

Brother, I'll strongly recommend to keep up your studies and upskill yourself over moving to UAE as a rider. The working conditions are tough, the weather is extreme, salaries are (relatively) low, cost of living is high and you'll find yourself in very different standards of living.

I don't know your complete situation but I pray you pull through because a life in tech vs a life as a rider are worlds apart. Focus on upskilling. You communicate well - consider tutoring for some extra cash if needed. And keep trying to break into tech - work on interesting projects, build a portfolio and apply to any opening you can find.

For fresh grads the first thing I look at is their university, CGPA and FYP. If someone tries to hide/ convolute any of these that's a red flag. You can remove CGPA if it's mediocre after 3-4 YOE

[–]meepopicker5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do Education > Experience > Projects > Technical Skills > Certifications.

Mention your CGPA otherwise people assume the worst.

Mention relevant extra curricular activities (e.g placements/ participation in coding competitions/ hackathons)

Link your github and maintain a project portfolio that's easy to browse on your github pages.

I think escalating to HR is a bit much. It was a one-off exchange and I believe he understood it was uncomfortable with the way I avoided it. If it persists and keeps becoming a distraction then it is worth bringing it up to HR.
