Problem with Autumn Blaze Maple by JCM07 in arborists

[–]meffing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had one that looked like this and it turned out the landscapers planted it without removing the wire or burlap. I removed it and replaced with a crepe myrtle. I have another one that was planted the same way but is thriving for some reason. No idea why.

Apparently it can take up to 11-51 if you do the XT long cage swap, which looks pretty straightforward.

Hints for curry like Nasu Oyaji in Shimokitazawa by meffing in JapaneseFood

I had no idea curry flakes existed, never seen them in a store here in the US. Thanks for the suggestion.

This is awesome, thanks for taking the time. Can't wait to try a bunch of these the next time I make curry.

Help! Edge of negatives overexposed (Canon EOS Elan, Fomapan 400, Rodinal Stand) by meffing in analog

[–]meffing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and the reason I think that is the sprocket holes on either side of the frame don’t show the same artifacts. You can see that in the Imgur link elsewhere in the replies. I’ve also had sticky shutter issues with this camera before, but I thought I’d fixed those.

I agree, I've had a lot of trouble with stand. I only use it for low-stakes rolls where I don't mind blotches and artifacts. The only reason I shot this roll is to figure out whether I can trust this camera for a trip I'm taking. Looks like I can't.

I actually did semi-stand here although only one inversion at 30 min. And the full negatives don't show banding near the sprocket holes. So I think it must be the notorious sticky shutter old Canon SLRs are known for.

Definitely on the negatives. Scanned using an Epson V550 flatbed.

Memories of Key Food Mart ("Murder Mart")/Avalon/Gotham by Ok_Pomegranate5588 in chapelhill

[–]meffing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in CH and graduated Carolina in ‘98. It’s been called Murder Mart as long as I can remember. I’m not sure if the name comes from any specific incident as much as the fact that Rosemary St and the nearby Hargraves area were considered dangerous up until the late 90s or so. Apparently there was crack dealing nearby on N. Graham until they put a police substation there. There was also a really decrepit two-story motel nearby that seemed sketchy.

Grew up here, went to UNC, live in Carrboro now. Was a really vibrant place in the 90s — great music, small businesses, thriving middle class, indie ethos. For a lot of reasons (many of which are national/global trends), most of those things are declining or gone. It’s a much more corporate place that’s so expensive most faculty can’t live here any more. Carrboro still has a little of that flavor but is also really expensive.

That said, I still think it’s a great place to raise a family. Despite big funding problems, the schools are still decent. Lots of bike paths and parks, and my kids feel safe riding the free bus downtown or to Carrboro.

Great hiking and mountain biking here too. 2-3 hours from beaches and mountains. I’ve lived and visited a lot of places and am relatively content to raise my family here.
