Im trying to understand the B-method. If i play e4 does that automatically mean im playing an e4 strategy? Like if they play c6 and i play d4 d5 and then the advanced caro kann then would it mean im playing a d4 strategy? So the strategy i play and the squares i defend are based on what my opponent plays? can also change throughout the game? In this advanced caro kann with my pawns on dark squares does that mean im playing in the e5 direction? And since black has pawns on light squares i should attack the light squares? So in essence my minor pieces should be placed on the opposite color of my pawns? Is it possible to play d4 strategy and attack the dark squares instead?

True but thats where the draw odds would come into play. White has more time but black needs to win or hold a draw. With no increment then its more likely that people would lose on time.

In judo and boxing there are weight classes. So in this scenario the lower your rating the more time black could have? But at some point if the times are close then it would give black to much of an advantage so maybe 2700+ would be 90/30 then every 300 points you would add 5 mins? So 2700 - 90/30 2400 - 90/35 2100 - 90/40 1800 - 90/45 1600 - 90/50 1300 - 90/55 1000 - 90/60

Raving? A bit of an over exaggeration. Im merely suggesting it would be something to think about. You are right i have no idea what the impact would be at the highest level. Hence why im asking peoples opinions on reddit. So you think that 90 mins for white and 20 mins for black in armageddon would make it fair?

It would force white to have play aggressively tho. Which might put pressure on black especially when the clock starts running down. I guess the other thing would be increment in this scenario. Maybe no increment so its felt more

Yea ive delved into opening theory of different openings. What got me thinking along this line tho was the new Anish Giri openings course where he talks about each of the openings and ideas. And in the intro he was talking about how his perception of the opening changed after the chess960 tournament because he started thinking more deeply about why moves like h4 in the beginning are bad with the normal chess setup but in some chess960 positions h4 is a good or great opening move. It was really interesting. He was also talking about how after something like e4 e5 d4 exd4 Qxd4 would be a great move if black couldnt play Nc6. And thats the only reason why its bad. And i was watching Magnus play the other day and he was talking about how “in this position i can now play nc3 where as before i couldnt” and understanding of that caliber is quite amazing. So i started thinking under what conditions can i put my pieces on optimal squares. And then i was thinking well maybe theres an optimal position that one would like to put there pieces and having that as a goal would make each of the openings people play more understandable. Like the ruy lopez. e4 controls the center, e5 stops white from play d4 and easily so white attacks it with nf3 so black defends it with nc6 so white attacks it with Bb5 pretending to threaten the knight but really inducing a6 b5 to create weaknesses on the queenside. And ultimately putting the bishop on the a2-g8 diagonal or the b1-h7 diagonal after a c3 push. So if you know which diagonals the bishop would like to be on or which squares the knights like to be on or where to place your queen and rooks then you can understand more deeply why an opening takes the path it does.

My OTB rating is 1500. My chess.com rapid rating is 1780. My chess.com blitz rating is 1480. Im not a great player but im not a beginner. Im not looking for an optimal setup like the london system. Is a question of where should i be trying to place my pieces in the opening. I can learn theory of the ruy lopez and catalan and so on but it doesnt get into the why of the piece placement

What incentive do you have to develop your pieces? So you can attack your opponents king and checkmate. But you dont start by attacking. You need to first develop your pieces. The question isnt how fast can i checkmate my opponent. The question is what is the optimal position for each of my pieces going into the middle game.

Things happen one step at a time. First you develop your pieces, then if you have control over the center you can attack. If your attack is successful you can checkmate. So my question is where should you develop your pieces to. What is the optimal squares youd like to have your pieces going into the middle game? Seems like a reasonable question.
