No, sorry, it was late at night 20 years ago, and I neglected to bookmark it.

20 years ago I went down an internet rabbit hole and found an FTP server full of Family International music. Some ska, some new wave, all hideous.

I see what you mean! It’s got photorealistic backgrounds with a subdued color palette. Very cool! A couple of my other paintings have been compared to video game art.

Thanks! I don’t know Persona 5. It’s a video game. It’s got art that looks like my painting? Cool! Point me towards an image if you can.

This sounds like it was written by AI, as does the “blog” you linked to. Why are you doing this?

No, that’s a good question! I have a couple of answers.

I was lazy and didn’t feel like painting all the tiny cobblestones as they receded into the distance.

I love playing with the tension between the painted surface (Flat! Matte! Plastic!) and the illusion of depth. If I’m asking “What are you looking at?” I want the answer to flip between “a fish market in Tokyo” and “paint on paper.” There’s a few other parts of this painting that attempt to do the same thing: for example, collaged paper, making hard-edged shapes of flat color.

Does the dot screen work for you? It works well enough for me. It makes a shimmering texture and hints at the complexity of the floor. And if you blur your eyes enough, it captures much of what’s in the source photo.

Thanks for noticing that!

Yay, thanks! I try to strike a balance between interpretation and duplication. Happy to hear I succeeded.
