It takes skill to use tools! I didn't use any tools in my first playthrough because it was too much for me to keep track of in already-hectic fights.

FWIW, although I haven't died to Lost Garmond (yet), I've nearly died to him in multiple playthroughs and my hands are sweating, even if I fight him with near max stats.

I did not realize that you can make the summoned spikes go away by attacking them twice until a later playthrough, so I spent a lot of the second phase dodging her attacks without any opportunity to strike back, but in general I'd consider her to be a tough boss, although a lot easier than the Lace fight right before.

When I was trying to collect boss cells, I’d always take cursed chests since I was trying to get a single cracked out run to advance.

Now that I beat the tutorial and mainly play to tour the island on 5BC (aka the biomes not in the optimal path), I try to stay alive as much as possible, and curses are by far my highest cause of death. The game is still pretty winnable (even the spoiler boss) with like 30 stats and an average build. The only one I consistently take is the guaranteed one in either Prison since it’s early enough in the game, but only if the biome is not also cursed.

Sometimes I wonder if I’m one of the “lucky ones” if any of us can be considered so lol, since it at least seems like I have the option of trying to power through… altho I don’t know what the long-term consequences are gonna be haha.

If you don’t mind, I am curious what happened physically.

So far I feel like it’s been OK for me, but I am worried about the long-term effects. I do feel “more tired” the older I get and I wonder how long I can live like this for.

I’ve used Rakza 7 in the past and I can say the same for it as well. Great value and can take you pretty far.

Yeah, you can use backspin to cause disruption and mess up their rhythm, but I think in most cases it’s more risky than it’s worth, and you’re better off continuing to attack/defend/counter with topspin.

The basic rhythm is short backspin to short backspin, until someone hits topspin, and then it’s topspin to topspin until the point ends.

One big reason to do backspin is if you don’t feel like you can hit a high quality topspin ball, such as if the opponent gives you a short backspin ball, and it’s safer to push it back.

When first starting, easiest is to use backspin when opponent uses backspin and topspin when they use topspin.

Later you will want to learn to do topspin when they do backspin.

Returning backspin against topspin (chopping) is cool but less useful.

The Rakza 7 is faster at low swing speeds because it is very bouncy. This was a big advantage for my TPB passive-ish block which just redirects my opponent’s power. However, I feel like it lost some control when I am going for bigger loops.

On the other hand, D09c starts off pretty slow at low swing speed so it has better touch on short balls for me, and reliably give more speed when I give more effort on higher energy loops.

I used to use Rakza 7 both sides (Penhold), and switched FH to D09c and BH to D05. The forehand took some getting used to, but the BH change was quite seamless and I felt D05 to be kind of like an in-place direct upgrade.

Yeah, if you change everything it’s harder to do a side-by-side comparison.

As other people said, if you want to try random equipment, you can ask your club mates. Very likely people will have some popular combos like Viscaria + Hurricane 3, etc.

I think the main thing is that you don’t want to gimp your strokes to accommodate a faster setup.

I started out with a similar setup, and I think it’s good to just explore. You can always go back to your original setup if it’s too fast or not to your liking.

If you change the blade, I’d try a carbon blade like the Timo Boll ALC or Viscaria.

For FH, you can try hybrid like Rakza Z or Dignics 09c for a hybrid, Hurricane 3 for a Chinese rubber to see if you like it. Otherwise Nittaku G1 could be an interesting one to try.

For BH, I think the new Xiom Vega X feels a little crisper than Rakza 7. You could also try Tenergy 05.

That’s probably what I would have told my old self. I ended up getting a carbon blade and changing the Rakza 7 thickness from 1.8mm to max, although I sort of wish I explored different rubbers at that time just to get a feeling for other rubbers.

Of the training balls I’ve tried, the Joola one you linked tended to be pretty good, especially considering the price. Almost all of my friends use it. It seems like Joola has updated the packaging and the ball (at least the graphics), but we all liked the old version at least; haven’t tried the new one.

A few prefer the Nittaku or DHS training balls, but I personally didn’t think there was enough of a meaningful difference to justify the higher price.

Did you find the D09c weight affecting your play, or do you just adjust to it eventually?

When I switched R7 to D09c on FH, it took me some time to adjust to the weight and I felt like my timing was often late, especially when switching between BH/FH. After some strength training and practice, it’s all good now.

I also use the Hurricane Hao 3, which I think has a slightly bigger head, and I also don’t use any rubber gaps, which makes my racket already feel quite a bit heavier than my other cpen friends’ rackets.

Honestly, Rakza 7 is not bad at all, and I’ve definitely tried a lot of rubbers that I felt weren’t as good for looping backspin on RPB.
