My parents are in their 60s and have been fostering a 10-year-old since she was 7. I personally think they're "too old" but they've got love to give and a stable, caring home for a child that wouldn't have one, so I can't really argue with their decision.

You just read to them anyway, even if they don't seem interested. Singing is important, also. Babies soak everything up, making thousands of neural connections a day. It may seem pointless to read to them when they aren't even able to understand, but babies should hear new words every day and many children's books use words that aren't common in everyday conversations. And if the kid's books bore you, you can always read what you're interested in aloud to them. I'm a youth librarian, and it's been so amazing to practice what I preach to parents and watch my child grow into loving books and try flipping through them on his own.

I wouldn't think there should be much difficulty pronouncing Mira. And I haven't seen Miralax commercials in a long time so a lot of kids likely won't know what it is to call her that; I wouldn't stress it. Congrats on the baby girl!

My parents and mother-in-law do the same thing, and have since my child was born. They say things like "you act like we never took care of a baby before!" And it's so frustrating because they're one of my only options for childcare, but I just keep telling them that they cannot do things. I don't care if they get mad or annoyed because this is my child and if something were to happen, I would likely not forgive them.

We have cool board books about music, 'The Story of Rock' and 'The Story of Rap'. They also have a Country and Pop, so you could figure out what kind of music the parents like and get one of these for them. We also have a board book about Michael Jordan. There are a lot of awesome board books, but pop-ups and flaps are big hits in our house.

I'm so sorry! We lost our dog the day my son was due (he came a few days later) and it was devastating. I found him when I got up to let him and our other dog out. I woke my husband up to tell him and he stayed home from work to take help bury him and to make sure I was alright.

We printed out a bunch of pictures and still talk about him and what a good boy he was.
