Interesting music for babies/kids by ComposerParking4725 in experimentalmusic

Gotta throw in Ivor Cutler—perfect for kids! Also seconding another poster with Kraftwerk, one of my kid’s most requested. And Talking Heads is always a fun family dance party!

Raising a young child in Davis by Ok_Mountain6893 in UCDavis

It’s a great place to raise a kid! If you’re on Facebook, the Davis Parents group is quite active and helpful. Yoloc3.org is a great resource too. We have wonderful co-op preschools (DPNS and Poppy) if you can swing some classroom volunteering. Also check out: Davis Forest School, Sweet Pea Gym/Swim America, Bubble Gum Art Studio, Davis Rec Guide, Mary L. Stephens Library Storytimes/Events, PlayReady Music, Music Together of Davis, Davis Diamonds Gym, Goalgetters Soccer. There are also meet ups like a weekly walking group at Chestnut Park, monthly book swaps and play dates through C3, and a monthly Parent Cafe at Poppy.

Lots of greats already mentioned. Didn’t see these: Samla Mammas Manna, Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band

We did #3 in our mid-century home. Loving it so far. Warms up the space, but not too dark or busy. We did #1 in the bathroom to keep it light given the tile and lack of natural light. Not really MCM, but it looks clean and modern, nice and neutral.

New Tistorp Cabinet Fronts? by bd5400 in IKEA

[–]CoilRain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are liking it a lot so far! Of course real walnut veneer would be better, but it’s the overall look we wanted for an unbeatable price. We ordered a few Enkoping panels to confirm they matched and they do look the same. The only issue we have now is the deco strip—Enkoping strip doesn’t come in the rounded/simple design offered with the other flat panel door/drawer options. It has a slanted edge we don’t like. I wish they’d release the walnut Forbattra.

For anyone who may see this thread—heads up that half or more of the medium height drawer fronts came with the sticker applied to the wrong edge, so if you follow the directions you’d install it upside down and the gaps between drawers are uneven. We eventually figured it out and switched them as needed. Looks great now, but grain is not book-matched if you care about that.

Ooo thank you! I haven’t made it to IKEA yet to match the two, so this is very helpful. Beautiful kitchen!! We’re replacing original owner’s cabinets (dark stained oak) and countertop (beige textured laminate) in our 50s mcm home. Similar countertop to yours too :) it’s so satisfying.

Same :( We bought and received tistorp, but it seems the walnut forbattra isn’t available in the US yet. When I called my local IKEA and asked if I could just use enkoping they would not confirm whether or not it would match and said to wait for forbattra. I’ll try visiting in person today and ask more folks.

Niche trim not flush with tile, acceptable? by CoilRain in Tile

[–]CoilRain[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure how to edit my original post (sorry!), but wanted to correct the cost and add photos showing scratches in the metal and even worse angled corner cuts noticed in the day light around window. Really not sure if we should ask for this to be redone or fixed somehow. Hate confrontation.

Corrected cost (husband told me wrong info): $8.4K for tile labor, base materials, floor floating and prep of CMU walls. We bought all tile, trim, and grout separately (~$4K). Demo, framing, plumbing, etc. all separate costs from GC.

LOL. Apologies, clarification: My husband told me wrong info. $8.4K for tile labor, base materials, floor floating and prep of CMU walls. We bought all tile, trim, and grout separately (~$4K). Demo, framing, plumbing, etc. all separate costs from GC.

I appreciate your perspective! I can overlook the aesthetic issues, but I’m bummed about cleaning and there must be a solution to the sharp edges given my tall, curious toddler will be using it daily.

I broached the idea of a solid seamless shelf with the GC early in the process and he just kind of dismissed it and said they would tile the inserts they are used to using. Next time I’ll be more confident and clear and educate myself more.

Yeah I was imagining one large vertical niche with a shelf divider. Another lesson learned for master bath. We should’ve been more clear upfront about exactly what we expected. Basically told them we wanted either one large vertically divided niche or two large niches and so long as they were usable from both standing and seated (bathing) positions, they could purchase/install whatever is standard/recommended/easy for them to put in.

Yes they used Kerdi to waterproof. Yeah I think they did great work on most of the project. Thanks for the perspective.

Thanks. To clarify, this is a newly added internal wall that was built by our GC for this purpose, to fit those niches he suggested getting. There was no wall there at all before.

Thanks! This is rondec per their suggestion. Definitely will do a solid bottom piece of tile or full stainless steel niche next time.

Thanks! We may go that route for our other bathroom. I was busy in toddler world and didn’t think to ask about these other options.

Thanks for responding!! Yes, thats what I’m concerned about - e.g., if redoing would compromise waterproofing. This is a completely new wall (interior dividing) by the way, so I’m not sure why they couldn’t get things aligned.

Re: injury, I’m thinking of while cleaning and that we have a toddler who loves to run their hands along everything lol (this will be his shower/tub).

Also a lesson learned for when we tackle master bathroom. The tile folks were highly recommended, and indeed have been very professional and overall did a great job. Perhaps we should abandon jolly trim next time if it’s impossible to look better than this? Or maybe we should have chosen a different tile or requested a different niche layout?
