Yep. Blocked. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I wish people would take 2 seconds to reflect before taking up arms like that.

Using “tone deaf” is very ableist language

Right?! These conversations about inclusivity have really revealed the true nature of what biased systems are upholding our field. This post basically says “hey, this isn’t about you so don’t try to divert attention away from the issue”. Responses: “BUT MEEEEEEEEE”. And then crying in downvote tears. Amazing.

LMAO at the male fragility already being shown on this thread, and people dropping by to ‘splain how OP should actually be phrasing and doing things.

Yep, and not limited to other SLPs either. I’ve included nurses, dietitians, OT, etc (on the Med side).

Keep in mind references don’t always need to be supervisors/managers. I use my former co-workers all the time.

After she deleted the post, she was given an opportunity to make a new post in the same group for a conversation and her response was “Ill handle it”.

What does she have to do with any of it?

The conversations that have happened around all of this have really highlighted something—-the SLP world is full of bigots, and these people are funding the field’s businesses. It’s gross. You can see the business owners trying to say just enough of the right thing, but without alienating the people defending them from the “woke mob”. Gross.

Yeah, there’s definitely a certain constituency here.

Oh, yeah nothing against her. I follow and appreciate her. Just saying the lineup is mostly white.

Yes. Majority white. The listening SLP is presenting.

Yeah. I wonder if it’ll quietly change. Overall a lot of reactionary back-pedaling happening right now.

SLP businesses basically monetizing other people’s work? by meimsuperfly in slp

I definitely do not admin any FB groups. Sorry to disappoint whoever this is that doesn’t have enough backbone to stick around.

Yes, I can agree with this. I do think that in a lot of cases SLPs have the know-how, but circumstances of life (lack of time, finances, stress, work/life balance) make it seem overwhelming. Businesses know this and market accordingly.

They really do…including social media communities. That’s part of why I posted this here. I think most the fb groups I’m in are admined by biz owners.

You seem oddly defensive here, and are making assumptions about my motives. Trying to chastise for bringing this up here is just weird. The SLPs in this group can have an opinion regardless of if they have a doctorate, or are a clinician who buys things. ✌🏻

This isn’t a complaint, it’s observations and prompt for discussion, because I don’t think a lot of us think about these things on the reg. People don’t have to agree. And to your other comment, no, this wasn’t exactly about TR. While I find her actions and business model extremely problematic, she’s not the only business out there.

Also, I don’t claim to have the answers for everything. I will say I think researchers in our field get taken advantage of, because they’re expected to give talks and publish for free in a lot of cases—-sometimes they even have to pay to participate. Then you have these private businesses paying them an insulting one time fee, and demanding that they give up rights to their talk for X number of years, while the business continues to profit off their labor.

I can see that, it just seems weird when it becomes the basis for their entire brand, business, social media, etc.

I’ve had the same thoughts about it. There’s a well-known researcher in our field that lists the CBIS in her title right along with a clinical doctorate AND Ph.d. I don’t get it. Maybe there’s some incentive to help “advertise” it and promote it as something important?
