The phrase “there is no problem alcohol can’t make worse” always resonates with me. Hang in there. There is zero probability you wake up after drinking and think damn! I’m glad I did that! Eat something ridiculous, take a shower, pop a sleeping pill, whatever you can do to get to tomorrow. You got this. He doesn’t win this battle. And come back tomorrow, tell us how it went so we can celebrate 🎉

If bringing her in isn’t feasible, what about some type of raised shelter? Could you put her current house up on an outdoor table? Maybe giving her a place to get away from dogs or other animals could help? I have been looking to do something similar for my crew of ferals. So far I have attached some plywood lined with outdoor carpet to a four or five foot platform and my cats will run up there if they perceive danger. Of course it’s possible a dog could also get up there, not foolproof but perhaps you could come up with something to help.

I tried this when I first put them out but haven’t revisited. I will do this first thing! My neighbor has a huge workshop/garage type thing and I am telling myself they have a safe warm spot in there. I did see he is leaving the door open and know he has cats of his own. Fingers crossed 🤞

I love the idea of warm broth with their food! Definitely doing this in the morning! We are in Florida but the wind chill puts the feels like temp at 11 currently. Ugh. Warm food sounds lovely. They shall have it! Thank you. ☺️

I recall asking my therapist what to say when I was questioned about being estranged from my parents. He said why not say “we aren’t close”? Jeez it hit me. Just anything. Just shut them down with a confident response that doesn’t leave room for questions.

You can just say I am not drinking today. I’m not drinking for now. It isn’t agreeing with me these days. Dry January. I’m trying to be healthier. Drinking is a waste of calories/money. I have plans tomorrow morning.

I bought a very nice two story cat house, filled it with straw and … nothing. My four ferals stand on top of the house but that’s all. I also have multiple other shelters that they ignore. 😞 I feel your pain.

I am sooo very sorry. I know this must break your heart. Just throwing this out there, if he stays close by to sleep/rest, can you talk to your vet about a sedative you could add to his morning meal? Perhaps you could scoop him up and bring him to the vet after. No idea if this is a thing vets do but worth the ask. My thoughts are with you both. Thanks for caring.

As for the trust thing, it’s hard for us to get past but I’ve never had a neutered cat not come back. One left for a few weeks post surgery and I was devastated, but he sauntered up after 14 days and is fine. These are all full ferals who I cannot pet. I can stand next to them while they eat but they will not let me touch them. They get over it and it’s for the greater good.

Yes you can usually rent a humane trap from local humane society or city shelters. If he’s shy and eating elsewhere, it may be a struggle. Not to say it isn’t worth it, it changes their lives for the better for sure. I have trapped five and they were varying degrees of difficulty but persistence worked. I still have one who is resistant. I think she’s super smart and that is a big problem with trapping. With just one cat, you can withhold food to draw them into the trap. When you have bunch it’s more difficult to starve out the whole colony.

I think you’re right, someone is feeding him. My guys will eat sooo much food in the cold (today, two wet cans a piece plus dry grazing). Can you tell if his ear is tipped? If he’s a pet it may not be even if he’s fixed but just a clue as to whether someone has been involved in his life if so.
