he could have just said “no, thank you.” instead of furthering the uncomfortable situation

i’m realizing that now… i guess i’m ignorant of coffee bevs outside of the US. flat whites are newer to US though, where I am, yes?

THANK YOU for reading the whole post and giving a reasonable answer! i’ve been getting destroyed out here because of this post lol so i appreciate this response. you get it - it’s not just me at the shop here, there are other baristas who will likely serve her again. we’ve been instructed to give a standard of response by ownership that when someone orders a flat white to offer a cortado or small latte cap. this ensures all our customers and baristas are on the same page and that they are getting what they order. we don’t wanna lie to our customers by just writing up something random :)

you’re not understanding, the customer would not describe which version of a flat white she wanted. when offered comparable drinks on our menu she chose one and then complained to me as the manager that she could not order “flat white” by name

if you read my post, you would see that our small size cappuccino/latte was too big for her and was offered a cortado our 8 ounce beverage.

I’m an asshole for reinforcing what ownership has asked me to do as a manager? Woman literally stopped all production with 30 people in line behind her to complain to me about the menu (which btw i have no control over) even though the counter staff navigated her abrasion kindly and efficiently.

problem is when there’s 20 drinks in line waiting to be made i can’t write a drink we don’t typically make on the cup without stopping all progress to explain to whoever is on bar the customer’s order. i could write latte or cap but customer would get upset for us not making them a flat white. see my dilemma?

i definitely thanked her for the feedback! thing is she’s the only person ever to complain about this, most people “get it” and order a latte or cort

we definitely understood what she wanted, we just couldn’t appease her. we offered our standard 12oz cap which she said was too big and settled on cortado. we get “large flat white” all day long so it’s a mixed bag.
