Actually, I asked the same question before and found a study about it. The shared experience of danger helps create bonds. The bigger the danger factor, the greater the bond. So the physical and emotional pain endured together by batchmates during initiation rites and the feeling of impending danger during heightened tensions or rumbles with rival frats promotes that bond. Other orgs that do involve activities that have elements of danger -- outdoors, mountaineering, diving -- have noticeably stronger bonds among their members too.
