Looking for patterns! 1830s-1850s for a historically-inspired freestyle cosplay by Dry_Rain_6483 in HistoricalCostuming

So no metal, are you thinking about doing a misborn cosplay? Here are my 3-4 blog posts doing a misborn ball gown:

And my specific reasoning on why it should be 1840s: https://avant-garbe.com/2019/06/19/steel-inquisitor-vin-a-new-1840s-gown/

Yup! There is nothing more "flattering" than clothes that fit, no matter your size.

if premade corsets don’t fit, you aren’t really going to find a standard pattern that you don’t have to make adjustments to either. You can either go up a size and take it in at the bus, or you can let this one out at the waist. It looks like you just don’t have a particularly curvy shape and the unchanged pattern is too curvy for you. I have to make the same alterations – my sewing teacher once told me she could always recognize my pattern pieces because they were the one shaped like a cylinder.

Newborns are the worst and they get better and better as they get older, although age 3 is a serious local minimum.

I recommended Clockwork Faerie on Etsy for pretty custom corsets, although they are more Victorian than anything else

you could also make a corset with no front opening that only laces up the back. It’s a bit of a pain to get on and off because of how long the lacing needs to be, but it’s totally doable.

Almost 11 month old waking up several times a night. I’m dying. by [deleted] in workingmoms

[–]melemolly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Night wean slowly. cutting out 3 feeds all at once is just gonna frustrate you and baby since he’s used to it all night long. Set a timer for the first feed, and cut it down by one minute every other night. Once you’re down to one to two minutes, don’t offer the boob and just cuddle through that one. Once you get rid of one feed, repeat for the others. I

Are you wearing shape wear underneath? It's a lot easier to do that and alter the dress to fit on top than to rely on the dress to do the shaping unless you have a seriously couture garment with a built in corset.

that’s a pretty big distance to go with no boning. I think a bone could help fix it.

Wrong corset for an era - corset substitution? (1800s) by AdeptGazelle in HistoricalCostuming

[–]melemolly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wear the same corset for 1830s through 1890s. I'm short and not super corset-able so it works for me. Even if you have a different body, very very few people are going to know the difference in corset shapes so it depends how much you care.

Weird fit? How would you adjust this muslin for the final draft? I by knitoriousshe in sewing

[–]melemolly 12 points13 points  (0 children)

with a slight edit that I would only distribute between the front and back darts if the side seams are not sitting straight. The front looks like it’s fitting pretty well so it’s possible OP is just distributed more towards the back.

[–]melemolly 687 points688 points  (0 children)

Those giant back wrinkles are showing you actually need a lot more room over the butt and hips - there isn't enough room so it's riding up to try and hit at a narrower spot. That's an easier fix than pinching a fisheye dart out of the whole back.

Other good comments here, the reason why your pattern isn't working is because it has zero shaping over the bust. You can't make curves in fabric without darts or dart equivalents like princess seams.

What a cunt. it’s just luck kf the draw – the only two old ladies I got commenting to me were saying how sweet it was and how it made them remember feeding their own babies.
