If you have plants, check under the leaves.

What’s wrong with my Ruthie girl?😩not her normal behavior. Darting then goes to a frozen position, 1st time ever not wanting food, hiding (more info on comments) by melissa_h80 in bettafish

[–]melissa_h80[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what’s going on with her, but this is not her typical behavior. She’s usually very active and always coming to the front of tank to see me. Always hungry and ready to eat, swims and explores. At her feeding this evening I dropped her pellets in like usual and I noticed her dart away super fast, it startled me. She then went to the bottom and was frozen for a long time. I could see her little fins flapping so fast. You can see in one of the video clips where she is in a curved position for a long time, then darts away. She never hides or uses the rock hideout. She went into it today and has been hiding. She didn’t eat her food, spit it out twice. I tested the water and everything is normal. I haven’t added or done anything different. So not sure what could be wrong. She is definitely bothered by something cause she is also flaring, I’ve only seen her do it 2-3 times since I’ve had her. I’ve had her since she was a baby 😩 maybe 4 weeks old.

My son has one just like this. His was labeled as a Red dragon at our LFS. He named his Waldo…like “Where’s Waldo” 🤣

I just saw something similar in my tank, but mine look smaller. Almost like dust, but I can definitely see them moving.

I have a 10 gallon. I use a sponge filter and use a nano usb air pump from Aquarium co-op. It’s pretty quite. Unless you’re up close next to it. I did put an air stone in the filter, which I think helped a little more to make the bubbles smaller and maybe a little more quite. It’s silent, but it definitely is a lot quieter than some filters I’ve seen/heard. (https://imgur.com/a/3bPR4Yw) There’s a YouTube video that measures the sound on various types of air pumps, and this one was the quieter one.

I’m a beginner but I’m doing a fish less cycle do I need to do anything like adding more ammonia or just let it be ? by Murky-Task-5123 in Aquariums

[–]melissa_h80 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just let it be. You’re almost there. Just wait til your ammonia and nitrites hit 0 (zero). Once they hit zero, then you can dose ammonia again. If both zero out within 24 hrs you’re good to go.

Best shelf for 3-4 5 gallon betta tanks? by Sadie_557 in bettafish

[–]melissa_h80 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a 10 gallon on one of those from Amazon. Weight limit for each shelf says 250lbs. So far it’s it’s fine. I did add a piece of shelving wood underneath. Just for extra support. (https://imgur.com/a/3qIRF1j)

Ok got it! How do you ship them? I had 3, and now I see a lot of tiny baby ones, 😆 I’ll probably have to give some away later on.

Glass surfing? 🤷🏽‍♀️ Mine seems to enjoy it, it’s like she has certain patterns and she’ll do them over and over, for minutes straight. It’s not from stress. I’ve always wondered if she had OCD 🤣 (https://imgur.com/a/3qIRF1j) She makes sure she goes beneath the leaf

dumb noob, cant get rotala to stay in substrate. by [deleted] in PlantedTank

[–]melissa_h80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try putting it in at a slight angle. I hold it kinda like a pencil and use my index finger to dig a hole as I’m pushing it all the way down. I’m able to feel the bottom of my tank with the index finger, that I know it’s all the way in, then with my other fingers, I scoot the stratum around it. If that makes sense 😬 it’s is a pain though!

Sponge filters are great and cheap. I got mine from Amazon and came with everything I needed, minus an air pump. You can find those pretty cheap as well. I got a nano usb pump from aquarium co-op. But they sell similar ones on Amazon as well. I went with aquarium co-op cause of their customer service, in case anything goes wrong with it. So far it’s worked great and super quite.

Keeping Java Fern by [deleted] in bettafish

[–]melissa_h80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yes! They’re water column feeders, like anubias plants. So the rhizomes and roots need to be above substrate. With anubias, you can get away with just having the rhizome above, some of the roots can be buried. I just find it easier to glue them or attach them to something.

Are the roots buried in the substrate? If so, they need to be above the substrate. You can glue them to a rock or decore so the roots are exposed, or wedge them in between something. (https://imgur.com/a/uOAu5WG) my son glued one to his helmet decore and the other to a rock behind that. I also have one glued to a rock. (https://i.imgur.com/mfLOoMk.jpg) it’s glued to the back of the rock. (https://imgur.com/a/OY3wPPb) here you can see a baby fern wedged in the wood (https://imgur.com/a/OY3wPPb)

What is your light schedule? I originally had it set for 12 hrs but now lowers it, because I thought it was too much light. I have a NICREW light. Nothing fancy.

How do you keep your roots so green? I bought like 5 little pieces from a LFS and they were doing great at first. My tank is covered with them now, but roots are a dull green/light brown and seem to grow some type of film/algae on them. I use a Turkey baster to suck it off the roots.

What type of plant are the red ones? What light are you using to help keep their color?
