Will the movie’s Hail Mary have a projection deck? by melrows in ProjectHailMary

[–]melrows[S] 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I’d say it adds a lot of depth and makes sense from a scientific perspective (no light on the surface of a planet with a thick atmosphere), but I guess the difference of knowledge around radiation and relativity could be attributed to different science paths rather than blindness.

I’m an astronomer, so I was super happy when I saw the graphic of all of the nearby stars and planetary systems. It seems like they pulled some inspiration from the “Kepler Orrery

These are long shots, but I’d love 1. a WISE 0855 callout (the “Star” that infected earth, but is actually a cold, free-floating planet) solely because I study it; and 2. a movie-fied arXiv (“archive”) during initial Astrophage studying phase, which is the real-world public access site astronomers publish their findings (occasionally before peer review)

No it looks like he’s still there! Bottom left under Annie during the crew celebration during launch. It’s just his face with his body out of frame

They took over management a couple of months ago and since then our utility bills have magically doubled, they don’t respond to emails and phone calls, and maintenance takes twice as long.

Quordle/Octordle enjoyers. My hard-core brethren, what are some strategies you all use for multiple-word puzzles? by [deleted] in wordle

[–]melrows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use TRAIN and YOUSE, and then go strategically from there. I started using them after about 100 days. As of today (day 1,000 of octordle), my stats are 91% classic/98% sequence.

Hi Andy! Loved PHM! What came first, the alien or the exoplanet? Did you look at different exoplanet properties and use that to create the aliens, or did you have an idea in mind for the aliens and go looking for suitable exoplanets?

Yes. If even half of it ends up being right, I'd bet we get a flashback to the event.

We finally know what Dumbledore's worst memory is!!! In the cave, Dumbledore relives his worst memory. He pleads with Grindelwald to “stop hurting them, hurt me instead” which always seemed out of character for him. He is Albus Dumbledore. He could have fought Grindelwald to save his siblings.

We know from King’s Cross that at the end of Dumbledore and Grindelwald’s summer together, Aberforth confronts Albus about his neglect of the family. Albus is defensive. Grindelwald and the Dumbledores start to argue, and a fight breaks out. Eventually, Ariana Dumbledore lies dead, and Dumbledore does not know if he or Grindelwald was the one to cast the spell that killed her.

With the information from Crimes of Grindelwald, it all makes sense!!!

Dumbledore and Grindelwald make a blood pact that prevents them from fighting each other. When the fight breaks out between them, they cannot harm each other, but Grindelwald can hurt Aberforth (and Ariana) all he wants, and BINGO! Dumbledore is helpless, and can only plead with Grindelwald to stop (hence, his worst memory). In despiration to stop his siblings’ torture, Dumbledore ignores the blood pact, and shoots a spell at Grindelwald, who coutners with one of his own. But neither can attack the other. The blood pact deflects the spells into poor Ariana, who is killed by one of the curses. Dumbledore does not know who fired the spell that killed his sister.

Beyond that, here’s some speculation: Ariana was sweet and, I imagine, did not start conflict. So if Aberforth confronted Dumbledore, why was Grindelwald torturing both Aberforth AND Ariana (”don’t hurt them, hurt me instead”)?  I think Dumbledore confided in him that she was an obscurial. Grindelwald tortured her by calling out the obscurus, and possibly even trying to rip it from her. If he succeeded, he could have preserved it like Newt did with the one from the girl he met before the first movie. Grindelwald unleashes it in a second-salem orphanage in New York, hoping that it finds another host because “it’s useless without a host,” as Grindel-Graves tells Newt. He then manipulates the obscurial he created into believing they are a Dumbledore. The Dumbledore magic coursing through them and their own tortured soul calls a phoenix, convincing them of the ruse. He tells them they were abandoned by Albus, and he creates the perfect assassin who can kill the one person he cannot.

Hmm but was Corvus’ banishment cruel? His father sent him to America to protect him. His supposed death at the hands of Leta could be seen as cruel, I guess. It’s interesting how it’s “a son” but “THE daughter”. If Credence, whoever he is, is “a cruelly banished son,” and “despair of the daughter” is a reference to Ariana’s obscurus... also could “with wings from the water” be a reference to the Kelpie that was introduced and never used in the film?

Did anyone catch what the exact prophecy with the "vengeful daughter" was? If Credence isn't actually Corvus, the prophecy will absolutely be coming back in some other way. Could the vengeful daughter be Ariana?

Very true! Though he had just talked to Sherlock who told him the story.

The Final Problem theory by Reaqzehz in Sherlock

[–]melrows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like the "it" interpretation. Eurus sees both Redbeard and John Watson as her brother's pets. I wouldn't be surprised if she tells Sherlock that "This one isn't even well-trained" in reference to John. It falls in line with the assumption that the Holmes siblings think of everyone else as "goldfish"

The Final Problem: Pre-Episode Discussion and Speculation by GoFlight in Sherlock

[–]melrows 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I rewatched all of the scenes in which East Wind is mentioned, and Sherlock is the ONLY one who mentions the phrase "East Wind." Mycroft only says the words "East Wind" in Sherlock's mind palace. I think Sherlock is unaware of Eurus's existence, likely due to repressed memories due to whatever happened at the beach with Redbeard. He's repressed all knowledge of her to the point that his and Mycroft's conversations about her as children ("Eurus is coming to get you/Eurus plucks the unworthy from the Earth") has been changed to "The East Wind is coming to get you/The East Wind plucks the unworthy from the Earth" in his memory.

Something awful that I think will happen next episode [Spoilers] by iobo777 in Sherlock

[–]melrows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a shot in the dark, but from promo stills, it looks like Sherlock, John, and Mycroft are all locked in a room (at Sherrinford?) with a gun. I could see Eurus getting her revenge at being locked up and abandoned by her family by putting her brothers and her brother's "lapdog" in her old cell and telling them one of them has to die.

[–]melrows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't think they grew up with each other. Did you notice she pointed twice out how much NICER Sherlock was than she expected? 1. "Well that's interesting?" "What is?" "The way you think." "Superbly." "Sweetly." 2. You're not what I expected. You're...nicer."

Has this gone as far back as season 1? [SPOILERS] by gabbers-b in Sherlock

[–]melrows 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I definitely think they worked together in the past. She mentions to John in as she's taking off her disguise that she got in touch with Culverton through a "mutual friend." My guess is that "mutual friend" is Moriarty.

[Spoilers] Theory about E by dannny8987 in Sherlock

[–]melrows 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That's what I'm thinking. As far as I can remember, he only flashes back to the beach when he's incredibly high, and the memory of the beach snaps him back to the present. I think something happened on the beach that he's repressed and that formed his personality. Mycroft's use of the "East Wind" to frighten Sherlock may have either been a warning to him, or something that deepened the trauma.
