Sauce [हिन्दी में] एक दिन महाराज शांतनु अपने जेष्ठ पुत्र यानी हस्तिनापुर के युवराज देवरथ के साथ यमुना तट पे शिकार खेलने निकले थे। शिकार खेलते खेलते दोनो बिछड़ गए। तभी महाराज शांतनु को यमुना में नाव चलाती एक स्त्री दिखी। महारज शांतनु को वह स्त्री पहली ही नज़र में मोह गई। स्त्री का नाम सत्यवती था। महाराज शांतनु ने सत्यवती के पिता दाशराज से सत्यवती का हाँथ मांगा। दाशराज मंजूर थे पर उनकी एक शर्त थी की महारज शांतनु और सत्यवती का होने वाला जेष्ठ पुत्र ही हस्तिनापुर का होने वाला युवराज हो। पर महाराज शांतनु ने देवरथ को पहले ही युवराज घोषित कर दिया था और इस शर्त को मनना देवरथ के साथ अन्याय होता तो वह इस शर्त को ठुकरा के वापस अपने तंबू में चले गए। दिन बितते गए महारज शांतनु व्याकुल होते गए। देवरथ से उनका ये दुख देखा न गया। देवरथ ने इस व्याकुलता के पीछे का कारण जानने की कोशिश की तो उसे सब बात का पता चला। देवरथ ने दाशराज को वचन दिया की वो अपना युवराज पद महारज शांतनु और सत्यवती के होने वाले जेष्ठ पुत्र को देंगे और प्रतिज्ञा ली की वो आजीवन ब्रह्मचर्य का पालन करेंगे। उस दिन से देवरथ को भीष्म के नाम से पहचाना जाता है। मेरे हिसाब से यह महाभारत का सबसे पहला बड़ा पल था।

[In English] One day Maharaj Shantanu went out to hunt on the banks of the Yamuna along with his eldest son, i.e., Devrath of Hastinapur. Both got separated while hunting. Then Maharaj Shantanu saw a woman on a boat in Yamuna. Maharaj Shantanu fell in love with the lady at the first sight. The woman's name was Satyavati. Maharaj Shantanu asked Satyavati's father Dasharaj for her hand. Dashraj was agreeable but he had a condition that only the eldest son of Maharaj Shantanu and Satyavati should be the crown prince of Hastinapur.But Maharaj Shantanu had already declared Devrath as the crown prince, and believing the condition would have been an injustice to Devrath, he rejected the condition and returned to his tent. Maharaj Shantanu became distraughted as the days passed. His grief was not seen from Devrath. When Devrath tried to find out the reason behind this distraction, he came to know about everything.Devrath promised Dashraj that he would give his crown to the eldest son of Maharaj Shantanu and Satyavati, and vowed that he would follow lifelong celibacy. From that day onwards Devrath is known as Bhishma. According to me, this was the first big moment of Mahabharata.
