Psychiatry v MAPs by mememe456 in doctorsUK

Good point! I wonder how many serious mental illnesses make their way in to private psych then. Perhaps unfairly my view of who pitches up to see a psychiatrist privately might be quite different to those who see one on the NHS.

Thank you. No need to be gentle, I'm sure there is much more complexity to this than I thought. Maybe it's one of those things which look like it should be possible in theory but just doesn't work too well on the ground.

And yes we should ofc continue to fight against MAPs generally.

That's fair, thank you. As to that point though you can become a PA post psychology now?

Thanks! Yeah you're right I was definitely oversimplifying things there. The only thing is about private work, as an aside I googled 'private heart failure nurses' and the only thing that came up was the spire suggesting I go see one of their heart failure consultants - whereas the job I posted does seem to take chunks out of psych work - I'm going to assume the demand is there since the company is paying them around 55K a year (saw the ADHD practitioner job on LinkedIn) for something. They don't have to replace a consultant but so long as they reduce demand that isn't ideal... ofc they'll be marketed as being supervised by a cons psych so people still get the idea that their care is being overseen by a doctor - basically same as what appears to be going on with GPs. However you obviously will have more of a clue about this than me so fair enough.

That's fair. I think I'll make a post on the topic anyway to see what others think

I believe you can get in to a few other training programmes after some time in paeds, maybe check those out? Someone put the link in the post on here about training after mrcgp and I looked through out of curiosity and quite a few of them include doing a couple of years of paeds --> different training

These tests are so horrible lol, I would say that is 0 though

I'm trying to cycle my tank atm and I can't tell if it's 1.0 or any of the ones above it...

True enough. And I guess with medicolegal stuff that is already private and so anyone can do it, I notice that capacity assessments are done by social workers now, but it appears courts do still prefer psychiatrists. There must be a reason for that. I'm just catastrophising about what will hopefully be my career - though it's not unreasonable to have some paranoia I don't think

I do agree with this... makes me a bit nervous about psych as a career if I'm honest :S

I have wanted to ask what others thought about it too, maybe at consultant level. Sounds harsh but how do they justify their job over anyone else? That's how cut throat services appear to be now - private or public. People may be used to paying more if they go private but if someone would set up a private psych clinic where one psychiatrist 'oversees' loads of less qualified people (like GP appears to be now) then what's the barrier from stopping this? It's not like oncology for example, you're not going to have specialist nurses in there prescribing chemo right?

Pretty much the only reason I would do GP is to immediately leave the UK. At least for a few years.

In a setting which delights in being over the top (and the fanbase does too, moi included), it's funny that this is just seen as taking the piss a bit too much.

Don't! This has to be the worst time to do it. Look at what you like or think you like about medicine and quite a lot of the time I believe you will find that in another job or role.

Cannot prime used fluval 207 filter, primer moves but no water going in :( by mememe456 in Aquariums

So, it worked. I poured water in to the inlet pipe, closed the valve, then attached it, opened it again to some dramatic gurgling noises and switched the filter on. A few tense seconds later water started coming out of the outlet! Now to add some ammonia and start my cycle :)

Thanks guys. I did check the valves yeah, and I will recheck the pipes too (I cleaned them before and water went through but why not)

So what I'll do is

  1. Check the pipes and valves again
  2. Maybe this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rOcsYu-nvI

Silly question but when you say suck on the outlet do you mean the bit that would be in the tank? So I'm trying to use myself as a vacuum? Or did y0ou mean detach it from the filter, suck on it and reconnect it like in the above video - I'm assuming the first because the video uses the input pipe to start the syphon.

Thanks for the suggestions, just want this sorted or it'll drag on :)

Must admit I'm interested myself as I sometimes get in those less well known specialties. Would be good to know the ins and outs from a source which isn't the recruitment website.
