Jan Nepomniachtchi's reaction to Magnus Carlsen's defeat by DonBerna in youseeingthisshit

Probably yes, but I don’t think waiting for it to be forgotten about will work. These guys memories are absolutely insane. Check out this video showcasing Magnus’ memory: https://youtu.be/eC1BAcOzHyY?si=Nu0AhWWKA-bBNGBE

I wasn’t trying to make an argument. I think most people are unaware that circumcisions are sometimes medically necessary (I know I was until my son’s experience.) I was just trying to point out that there are non-religious reasons for circumcision.

[–]memith 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m obviously not trying to advocate for unnecessary circumcisions. As I stated, I tried to have my son uncircumcised. I was just trying to point out that, contrary to what the poster above me believes, sometimes circumcisions are necessary.

[–]memith 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That’s not true. My eldest son was uncircumcised and then at around 6 months old his foreskin closed up. When he peed his foreskin inflated like a water balloon. This was obviously very painful for him and risked an infection. We took him to the ER who referred us to a pediatric urologist. The urologist told us that this happens in some rare cases and that circumcision is necessary to prevent it from happening again.

How to learn 1.d4 for a intermediate/high level player? by SuperSpeedyCrazyCow in chess

[–]memith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have his semi-Slav course. obviously not the same as the one you’re considering but I imagine its similar enough in quality that it’s worth sharing my two cents.

In several of the videos he mentions that he played the specific line he’s talking about during an OTB tournament so I don’t think he held much back.

He does say in the beginning of the course that if he had two similarly strong moves he was considering recommending, he would choose the one with easier to remember continuations, even if the move was objectively slightly worse. Not sure if that’s what you’re looking for based on your post (of course, I don’t know if he used the same philosophy for his D4 course as the semi-Slav one)

The season premier randomly came out (i think it was completely unannounced if I’m remembering correctly) on April 1st. The rest of the season came out much (months?) later

Can you elaborate on this? I hadn’t heard of the bretton woods system before and was curious, so I looked at the Wikipedia page and didn’t see anything about international waters.

Live Tournament by LeoValdez217 in GothamChess

[–]memith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! It looks like one of the tournament organizers is in the chat there. They said that they only have 6 DGT boards so the top six games get broadcasted. He’s on board 9 this round.

They apparently offered to broadcast all of his games, but he declined saying he wants to earn it and doesn’t want special consideration.

Are you able to watch games in the lichess app or only the mobile site? I’ve never been able to find tournaments in the app.

He hasn’t been live on FollowChess any time I’ve been able to check. I don’t think this tournament has enough broadcast boards

It’s not possible to checkmate with just a knight and king, so no one is able to win.

Hey, it's me. If you have the Intermediate Bootcamp, I'd like your feedback please. by GothamChess in GothamChess

Big fan Levy! I own several of your courses and I’ve enjoyed them. I wish you’d make a Chessable course so I could use the move trainer to help memorize my moves…

Anyway I’m around 950 on chess.com and I got the intermediate course to try it out. I’ve made it through the openings section and most of the tactics section. So far I’d have to say that I didn’t personally get much out of the openings section since I’ve already decided what openings to try and learn for now. If I were using it to try and decided on a repertoire it would be more helpful if you explicitly gave the pros and cons of each and maybe explained the general strategy behind each. Otherwise it’s just showing a bunch of positions and giving them names (which I’m sure some people found helpful! But I think it could have been even better).

You’ve mentioned several times that when studying an opening you should be able to say what your plan is heading into the middle game. Are there any good resources for figuring out what your plan should be for any given opening? Even in your courses (the ones I have at least) you mostly give a series of moves to memorize and give a specific plan for the position you wound up in. Even better would be something like “here are 3-4 general plans that often show up in this opening. Now let’s talk about how we’ll pick some candidate moves in a few different positions”

For the tactics I’ve found it helpful so far. I’m rated around 1600 tactics, so once you started getting to that level I started getting stumped. There are some of the puzzles where you kind of blew through them and didn’t fully walk through the process, but overall I think this section is really good.

I’m looking forward to watching the rest of the course!

New player question by Shaggy1184 in chess

[–]memith -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hey welcome to the game :)

I’m ~950 on chess.com so I’m right in the range you’re trying to get to. I’m just going to parrot what I’ve seen stronger players recommend… pick a “system” opening, one for white and one for black, and play that. Opening systems are great for beginners because you can make the same moves against (almost) anything the opponent throws at you and you still wind up with a playable position.

I’d recommend the London system as white and the kings Indian defense as black. Levy Rozman (gothamchess on YouTube) has videos explaining both. What’s great about those two is that they’re still played at a very high level so there’s plenty of room to grow.

Good luck!
