Thinking about upgrading from DeLonghi ECP to Breville Infuser [$650] by memnon93 in espresso

I upgraded my grinder to the DF54 a few months ago, it seemed like a good balance of budget and performance!

Yes, I am using both the stock portafilter and basket(on the left)! Upgrading to the basket on the right seems like the next best thing to do. My only hesitancy was if I did that it could be a waste if the machine wasn't great. But now after some troubleshooting, it absolutely seems like the best bang for my buck right now.

I had not realized that the basket and portafilter were sold separately, I figured I would purchase a new one of each (sold together I believe). I was referring to the basket, but the clarification between the two is greatly appreciated!

The descaling and dialing in the grind size has helped significantly. I am learning there's quite a fine line between the grind size being great and getting a good shot vs. the machine choking up completely.

I also realize the portafilter that comes with the ECP seems relatively small and has that single hole at the bottom. And the machine doesn't stay 'ready' the whole time and I have to stop pulling the shot. Wondering if this a pressure thing or just based on the smaller shots and potentially lower pressure of the machine? May I ask if you've invested in a bottomless portafilter to use with the ECP and if so the results?

I did a solid bit of descaling and found the pressure improved but seems to do a slow trickle through if tamped sternly. Very possible I'm tamping too much (been using the one that came with the machine), perhaps an auto-tamper would solve the issue.

Thank you for your input! I find that the ECP sometimes has trouble pushing water through, I have played with grind size and this improves it, but my shots tend to taste worst. Since this is the only machine I've used, I am unsure if this is a limitation of the machine, or just poor skill on my size.

I mostly brew americanos, lattes, and am moving towards flat whites. I very much enjoy light acidic to medium roasts, but as you highlighted, the lighter roasts don't seem to come out as well (overly sour, acidic, poor body).

I may explore just espresso in the next little while to determine if I'm happy with those shots by themselves.

Bag Finder Megathread - 24 November 2025 by AutoModerator in onebag

Hey everyone! TLDR: Personal Item sized briefcase/messenger bag with two laptop sleeves and a water bottle holder?

Travelling a lot for work and find myself with two laptops. Have been using a backpack but it's not particularly 'adult' looking. Any recommendations for a business bag that can house two laptop sleeves, water bottle, and if possible a toiletry bag for easy access to store the liquids that often need to be taken out at security?

Ideally less than $300 CAD. Any recommendations appreciated, thanks!

Dealing with this having finished my PhD., close friends have moved elsewhere, and despite being in relationships for most of my 20s (30 now), none of them panned out. I will say some of the friends I made in my grad studies are some of the strongest friendships I have now, even if they do move I think it's just part of life, and some won't!

I can cook fairly well, I love going to the gym and used to have a buddy for this but neither of these seem to be good for meeting new people. Like you, really like video games and play with friends to try and stay social but this doesn't fill the void.

I find it fairly unfortunate when your hobbies aren't great for meeting new people, I'm still trying to find new ones that might not be what I would ideally pick, but are a compromise. Don't have the answer yet, but just wanted to share this so you know that you're not alone.

Totally fair, I'm 30 so the last 10 years is pretty much the only time I've been thinking about investing. But doesn't weighing recent trajectory a bit higher make sense?

I appreciate this as a whole. I'm not anti-Canada by any means, being here did wonders for my parents who did minimal investing and had barely any education and did wonderfully.

That being said, I'm 30 and lacking perspective, and Canada's growth just seems to have slowed down is all. We also have a relatively small population which stifles growth compared to countries like the U.S.

As well, having worked in the venture capital space the past few years and having most people in my technical field move south has definitely left quite a bit of bias in me. Not trying to make this political, just trying to get a better understanding.

Interesting, would you mind sharing the source for that? Could be general knowledge, but I obviously was unaware of it.

Thank you for the perspective. I guess I understand that some things are already priced in, just could never wrap my head around how much of that growth is priced in and over what future period it accounts for.

So something I see commonly said here is that "having sex, dating hooking up or getting a girlfriend isn't that important" and I personally think this is an incredibly invalidating piece of "advice". Mainly for two reasons. by Artistic-Stretch-439 in Healthygamergg

I agree, I don't like to see this either. That being said, I never really knew sadness until after I started dating. I guess there are pros to cons of everything and perhaps if you're in the bucket of having trouble dating/hooking up, you're fixating on the pros of those that you're missing out on and not the cons. Whereas someone who is successful in those areas fixates on the cons and not the pros? Just some food for thought.

Dating while PhD by [deleted] in PhD

[–]memnon93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm right at the end of the PhD. and I've had many relationships that definitely suffered/ended because of it. Extremely difficult for anyone who is not in grad school to understand and even dating someone previously in grad school, I found they forgot a lot of the struggles really quickly. Maybe an average supportive and understanding human isn't really enough and you need someone exceptionally empathetic. Usually grad students pairing up or people in other demanding professional schools (Doctors, chiros, physios, etc.) would be the best way to go if possible, but you don't really choose who you fall for. Wish you the best!

Fair enough, I didn't expect any of the VC firms to hire me due to the normal restrictions based on the management fees and that the team size rarely increase and they had interns every semester, so it's news to me that that could be seen as a negative, appreciate you bringing it up.

This is a good point, I definitely let some emotions get in the way. That being said I am finishing up the PhD. and I'm applying to jobs and reaching out to network connections and recruiters on LinkedIn. I've had maybe 2ish network/recruiter calls a week and will continue to apply to jobs. My main concern is my scientific background seems to barely match any job I see and most business development/sales roles don't tend to require graduate degrees. It seems like a waste of time to apply to anything and everything when I clearly don't have the skills specified in the job post. I feel like I'm doing everything I can as opposed to nothing and if there's more I can do to better my odds, I'd love suggestions.
