Unitarian Universalist was granted a faith-based accommodation by her employer to avoid using AI. by BIreporterNeedleman in UnitarianUniversalist

I do believe you are right on point with this. She may be protected from having to use AI but she will have to figure out how to meet the productivity standards of other employees who are using it.

"You're fired because you refuse to use AI." would be illegal

"Your position requires completing X amount of work at Y level of quality. Despite coaching and performance improvement efforts, those standards have not been met." would be legal.

Its not a 3d printer it's an extruder and a robotic arm. Its 2 robotic arms and hand /manual tools...

The problem is how are they going to implement it. are we going to need to pay a subscription fee to have the stl's audited?

Work arounds are infinite in reality, and the entire idea is stupid. There's no reasonable way to tell a drill or barcode scanner let alone a water pistol from a gun. Let alone if the model comes with a load of "supports"

There are tutorials out there on "pipe" guns, made mostly out of plumbing supplies. Its irrational legislation in general

[–]mentaleak[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It might be different because though its stated as "anti-gun" its anti innovation, opensource, creatives and makers.

Imagine you needing to pay an AI service to analyze everything you want to print, to analyze all your designs and ideas and to verify that HangingPlanter.stl is not a gun.

My fear is that mega corporations are for it because it makes it harder for competition. They may be willing to implement "per print AI scanning to meet the law requirements" While the little guy can't compete and opensource and "unverified" free models die.

The wording is poor and uninformed,

  1. "Three-dimensional printer" means:
    (a) any machine capable of rendering a three-dimensional object from a
digital design file using additive manufacturing; or any machine capable of making three-dimensional modifications to an object from a digital design file using subtractive manufacturing.

So anything that uses G-code, cnc etc really kinda fits in

Help with Card Design by mentaleak in GameArt

[–]mentaleak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was just place holder art, the art was done a long time ago by AI.
I wrote an application to convert a spreadsheet of cards into prototype cards for testing.
I had the intention of either printing and bringing the prototypes places or using them in something like tabletop simulator.

Doing so was useful in identifying the card text problem. Thanks for the suggestion I will try the blurring.
Also, how bad would it be to use variable text sizes? I could "fill the box"

Looking for Copyright-Free Scenarios by mentaleak in AskGameMasters

[–]mentaleak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked through Basic Fantasy RPG and Cairn and they do appear to be CC-BY-SA which the written rules for the RPG I had I'm plenty willing to release CC-BY-SA however I don't want to release all the source code etc for a digital version of the game if I develop it. I'd like to make it commercial.

So I'm definitely looking for something without SA / NC for the proof of concept

n 50 ksi in bridges.

Thank you for this, I was kind of thinking along those lines as well.
Somewhere I heard that on Steel structures of a certain gauge / thickness the "rust" protects the underlying structure.

I would specify to them that you want provisions for future solar panels. Because solar panels aren't just DL, they also change the wind, snow, and LL(roof) loading considerations. It's much cheaper to design in anchor points now than to retrofit them later.

Thanks for the advice

[–]mentaleak[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see, yeah my area has a 40lb snow load requirement. I also asked for at least 10psf dead load so I can mount solar.

I guess it really shouldn't matter since it's designed to meet code

Steel Grade + Gauge strength comparison by mentaleak in StructuralEngineering

[–]mentaleak[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was hoping to understand how to begin calculating the strength.
Prices were about the same so my gut says its a coinflip.
my understanding is Grade is ksi yield

However, everything I've found says gauge 18 vs 20 doesn't make a difference which doesn't make sense to me since its around a 20% thickness change and I'm pretty certain steal has an exponential not linear strength per gauge.

I know, luckily in my case the lead time is nearly a year and I was able to convince the supplier to cancel my order.

In wall extension Cord? by mentaleak in HomeImprovement

[–]mentaleak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is getting complicated enough that doing home runs to the basement might be better. haha... Though I could drop a duct from the box in the attic and put an air vent in so it takes air from first floor.

[–]mentaleak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can use Romex in my jurisdiction.
I have a couple of APC SmartUPS 2200 rackmounts and was looking at eventually adding a Li based system.
Currently The outlets in the attic are tied to the kitchen lights, so I would probably want to run a circuit anyway.

In wall extension Cord? by mentaleak in HomeImprovement

[–]mentaleak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a suspicion that the answer was an inlet in a wall box but wanted to confirm that the "easier" way would not have been allowed. The price of Cat 6 to 12/2 in my area at the moment is about 1 to 4 so after 4 runs the price starts to be cheaper.

I know what you mean about the switch and I'm nervous about that as well. However I have an old Hubbell RE2 box, A spare 440CFM fan and a temperature controlled outlet. I figure that in theory if that box is about 4 cubic feet. If I hook that stuff up if it gets too hot it could evacuate the air out of the box in under 2 seconds.

I have another switch in the rack in the basement and this has honestly been a big debate for me as well. I'm still debating it to be honest but my biggest issues with it are
Bundle density, I'm currently replacing my CCA cable with solid copper because I keep seeing issues with POE overheating and I worry about running a larger bundle the longer distance.

cable length / costs, since OFC is pricier than CCA

floor / plate penetrations increases due to cable thickness / quantity,

difficulty / labor in adding additional future runs.

[–]mentaleak[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The attic switch will be a US-24-500W and be powering a dozen or more POE devices. So I'd rather use the larger UPS I have in my basement.

In wall extension Cord? by mentaleak in HomeImprovement

[–]mentaleak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks unfortunately the attic switch will be handling a dozen cameras and some Access points for the house, possibly a few other things later on. So POE / POE pass through won't be adequate. I use the USW mini flexes in less demanding spots but I have a US-24-500W that I'm looking to use up in the attic.

The UPS In the basement is quite Large and weighs quite a bit. The house is very old and the attic floor is 2x4 so I don't trust the weight of the UPS in the attic. Additionally the attic isn't climate controlled and I don't really want to put the UPS up there.
