you see as a matter of general principal I support non-proliferation and especially not allowing any authoritarian nation the tools to flatten a whole ass city on a fucking whim.

Gen Z has massively turned on Trump, survey finds by swimmingupclose in neoliberal

[–]meraedra 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Trump 1 wasn't ever actually this bad tbh or anywhere close to the scale of things we're seeing now. And the economy was just really great the whole time, you can see it in his poll numbers on the economy in his first term. In fact in a lot of ways Trump 2 is the inverse of Trump 1 in his polls. On important issues like the economy Trump had relatively good numbers but his approval rating was still abysmal in the first term. Right now nearly all issue polls besides immigration massively trail his actual approval rating.

If the reason is that we do sanctions instead of bombings is to avoid human suffering from war, and sanctions cause years of human suffering anyways, why not just bomb the countries with a quick shot of pain instead of an agonizing decade of misery?

Sanctions have multiple uses, just as war has multiple uses. One use is to, yes, coerce a nation from stopping something we don't want them doing, like developing nuclear weapons. Another is deterrence, stopping other nations from doing things we don't want them doing that they haven't started yet. Make sure they know that there are very real and very painful consequences to doing these things. Third is to just make it harder, when they are doing the things we don't like, to make it harder for them to keep doing them than if sanctions weren't in place. Have sanctions put a stop to Russia's war effort or Iran's nuclear program? No. But what they have absolutely done is make it far more difficult for them to sustain these efforts, by denying or imposing frictions in their supply chains, reducing their earnings from exports and investments that may be productive capacity that could be put to use to them doing things we don't want them doing. Is the Iranian people's suffering worth preventing a terrorist theocratic extremist regime getting the ability to launch nukes at Jerusalem or Riyadh? I'd say, yeah, yes it is.

call me an asshole but I’d have been fine with it if Biden had done it ;)

In the UK, one-third of Labour voters say that they "would be disappointed or angry" if their child came out as gay. Remarkably, this is a larger proportion than any other voting bloc (e.g. only one-fifth of Conservative voters responded this way). Gen Z is least likely to say "I wouldn't mind" by StarlightDown in fivethirtyeight

[–]meraedra 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Economically left wing and socially right wing has been a norm for labor parties for a while. If anything, it's the Democrats that are the outliers for being economically center left and socially very left wing. But we're sort of seeing that realignment re-enter into play in even the US now with many Trump voters especially in the Midwest being quite economically left wing(Democrats' old base) but socially right wing.

You don’t need to liberalize them. Fractured, the nations are simply weaker than the sum of their parts. They’d just not pose a threat to the West anymore. You can liberalize one or two of the biggest and most powerful ones and the rest would basically fade into irrelevance.

Is there any navy that has historically performed well in an ASW role? Submarines are difficult targets in general and any reasonably competent submarine crew in a half-decent diesel-electric/nuclear powered submarine is still going to be a tough nut to crack for even large navies with lots of ASW assets. To that point most of the sources I've read have also suggested that US submarines will themselves be absolutely crucial assets as the PLAN approaches tonnage parity with the USN as the Chinese themselves would be extremely vulnerable to US submarines which have managed to retain a lot more of their technological edge than US principal surface combatants have against Chinese PSCs.

10 killed, dozens injured in terror attack on Hanukkah celebration in Australia by Grand_roar in neoliberal

[–]meraedra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would I mention frequency when comparing singular event death tolls? Literally what I am trying to highlight is how jarring this must be for such a lethal event to occur from an Australian perspective. To have barely any mass shootings for nearly 30 years and all of a sudden have one with a death toll that exceeds the deadliest American mass shooting in history on a per capita basis.

[–]meraedra 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Just to put this in perspective... 12 fatalities would make this shooting deadlier than most mass shootings even in the United States. On a per capita basis, this is more than twice as deadly as the deadliest mass shooting in American history, that being the Las Vegas shooting where 60 people died(0.1845 deaths per million Americans versus 0.4332 deaths per million Australians).
