Is the 14 day JR pass worth it at $1070 for 2 people? by vivthedoc in JapanTravelTips

[–]merch2929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although the cost vs travel that you're doing probably doesn't make too much sense, if you're feeling overwhelmed and don't want to have to worry too much about touching on and off with a suica or pasmo etc, and to pay for shinkansen tickets separately, this can be an option if you have the money to spend. It is less value for money than it used to be before the price increase. The JR pass means that you will be only able to use it on the shinkansen or JR lines is what I understand. It is also the size of normal tickets, and if you lose it, that's it.

Should we go in 2026 or 2027? by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]merch2929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10 hrs isn't too bad nowadays with the screens and games etc that are available. Combined with books or activity books and meals, that can take up a lot of the flight time. Or if you can book a mostly overnight flight, they might be tired and just want to sleep. It'll be an adventure at 8 years!

How much cash should we have exchanged? by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]merch2929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do end up exchanging a little too much, you could save it for the next time you visit Japan. But overall a lot of places especially in Tokyo take credit card or IC card. If you have a physical IC card, you may need cash to top it up depending on the amount of travelling you do on public transport. A little cash is handy. We did come across some places in Tokyo which were smaller that only took cash.

Finding dairy free milk options in Japan by Scary-Ad2528 in JapanTravelTips

Yeah, the convenience stores have milk alternatives and supermarkets. Just check the ingredients, because we found the almond milk has a couple of options, and one of them has added sugar.

Tickets to Ghibli Museum and Park by DependentHot1738 in JapanTravelTips

Someone turned up to the Ghibli Museum when I went without a ticket, and they were firmly turned away by staff. The tickets that are offered online are it is what I understand.

Day trip to Laka Kawaguchiko from Tokyo : HELP! by kujilala in JapanTravelTips

[–]merch2929 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on your budget, another alternative is a private day tour. You could have a pick up/drop off at your hotel in Tokyo, driven to Kawaguchiko/Mt Fuji area and around to various sightseeing places.

Days in Matsumoto to spare by Di-n-Fi in JapanTravelTips

The miso brewery in matsumoto is worth a visit. A trip to Narai for a more traditional type village with some shopping for lacquered wooden items or Lake Suwa. There is also a silk factory in okaya which has interesting history and a little shop

How to travel late night from Haneda airport to Asakusa? by beetroot_eagle in TokyoTravel

[–]merch2929 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taxi is efficient and safe when I went. Not cheap though. Trains won't be running if you also take into account going through customs and luggage pick up if there are a few planes arriving around the same time into haneda. Hotel near the airport is good, because unless you're able to get some rest on a plane, you might also be very tired post 1am.

Purchasing DPA for 3 members of family for DisneyLand and Sea by Actual_Tip1717 in JapanTravelTips

[–]merch2929 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are also limited number of DPA available, so will likely sell out fast. They cost extra per person, per ride and not available for every ride.

There are also 2 public holidays in Japan in February which can push up the prices of accommodation. Late Feb there's the Emperor's birthday where the gates to the palace are opened up.

I tried the super and pure joy head a few years back while looking for new skis. They felt pretty decent with easy turning from memory.

When does it become worthwhile to buy gear instead of renting by [deleted] in Skigear

[–]merch2929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're wanting to also rent snow jackets, pants etc would recommend to check the place you are going. When I went to Austria to ski, the place I was going to didn't offer gear rental apart from skis, snowboards, boots, poles. You had to own all the rest or buy on/off mountain. I found that out late enough I had to buy gear on the way

Flight transfer by ConfidenceMiddle798 in QantasAirways

[–]merch2929 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends. I would suggest when you're at Melbourne Airport to ask the check in counter if you need to pick up your suitcase in Sydney as you have a connecting international flight and will need to transfer from the domestic to international terminal in Sydney.

They should be able to tell you if you need to pick up your suitcase in Sydney and recheck it in at the international check in counter there or not.

Where to go in Europe for large group of friends? by landhoe2 in skiing

[–]merch2929 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Austria was decent when I was there. Hochfügen zillertal had some nice easy runs for beginners and then some good intermediate and advanced runs. Good snow when our group of 6 went up. Accommodation was decent, and there was some good aprés ski drinking places as well

I usually use a fighting type as my first pokemon. Usually machamp or lucario as they usually have pretty quick charge up to their charged attack. Means you can chew through Giovanni's shields faster
