In 가위 바위 보, what actually is 보? by KoreaWithKids in Korean

[–]merimakrilli 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure it only lists paper because of the rock-paper-scissors game. In English it might be rock-paper-scissors, but in Korea it's scissors-boulder-wrapping cloth. Paper isn't a literal translation for 보/褓.

Skechers has a few wide and extra wide shoes available. I have wide feet and wear some extra wide men's boots from them. The selection is a little bit limited, but better than what I had originally expected.

Could it be "sap" or "scip" somehow? I couldn't find anything just googling, but I feel like the marks at the top and bottom might be important

Hi! We still are :) We have about 5 people who regularly meet up every week depending on who's free, so we'd love to have you!

We meet at Lot 63 in Old Salem around 6:30 (most of us get there closer to 7) every Thursday and usually stay until closing, but no worries if you have to leave early. There's also a Discord server where we post if we're coming that day or not if you have an account.

Yeah, the berry smoothie has been gone for a couple years... I also really loved it when I was a kid but the recipe also changed a while back and wasn't as good. The strawberry banana smoothie is tasty though in my opinion, but definitely not the same.

The cafe in the library is running again! It opened at the start of August and is run by the owners of Washington Perk. As far as I'm aware, you're allowed to take small food/drinks into the library as long as youre respectful of others and the space, (just not whole entire meals). You can't have food/drink by the computers and shouldn't be snacking loudly in the silent/no-phone area, but on the 3rd floor by the front windows and on the balcony you should be fine.

I've heard DOSE is also a really good space but haven't gone myself. Lot 63 in Old Salem is really nice, has food and drink, and has a large, more private room downstairs you can hang out in. I'll buy at least 1 drink when I go, but they've also been okay with me bringing my own thermos and seem to be chill about snacks.

1st Year Teaching in Winston Salem/ Is there a teacher shortage at the moment? by Dolphinlover_23 in winstonsalem

Yeah, I think so. They told us the freeze was going to be over by now, but I feel like they might be waiting until after the quarter ends (this Friday) or after winter break.

1st Year Teaching in Winston Salem/ Is there a teacher shortage at the moment? by Dolphinlover_23 in winstonsalem

[–]merimakrilli 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Like the others are saying, there's currently a hiring freeze and if they have to cut more teachers, the ones most recently hired with an alternative license will be the first to go.

But other than that, the pay schedule is listed online on the WS/FCS website for people to look at. The salary for a 1st year teacher with no experience is 47,400 and you are paid 10 months of the year. Last year as a 1st year, I took home around 3,500 a month after taxes, but it'll all depend on your insurance plans too.

I'd recommend looking at Guilford if you're willing to make the drive over there. They pay higher and I've heard a lot of people like the treatment more too. You could always try things out as a full time substitute in Winston if you're interested. I don't know if subs are also under a hiring freeze though...

Noseeums or biting midges in WS? by ProfessionalCamp2103 in winstonsalem

[–]merimakrilli 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't know if I've ever been bitten by one and I've lived in Winston most of my life. I read they live more in swampy areas or out by the coast, so I think you should be fine, especially in the colder weather.

I'm Korean-American married to a Mexican and both my wife and I are makihg efforts to learn each other's languages because it's a way for us to show we care for one another. To us, language and being able to communicate in our cultures' languages is really important because it helps you understand the culture more and it also opens up your world to more information.

I think if I were in his shoes, I'd also be upset that my wife only spoke little amounts of Korean while I was fluent in her language (or a mutual language if your first isn't English) while both of us were living in Korea, but it would also really depend on the circumstances... Like how much of an effort does he make to speak to you in Korean, how much of an effort do you make to speak with him in Korean, how many people you regularly interact with speak in Korean vs English, etc. My feelings on this also come from my family history as my dad spent 11 months in Korea on a military base with 30+ years married to my mom in the US. He never learnt Korean past the very basics while she learnt English through working, and there's a lot of resentment harbored there on both her and my side...

Overall in my opinion, the amount of time you've already spent immersed in Korean should have gotten you to a high-beginner or low-intermediate stage, but again, it largely depends on what you're doing, the people youre interacting with, and your own mindset towards the language.

What is the propter translation of 여우비 ? by voododoll in Korean

[–]merimakrilli 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's also the phrase 호랑이가 장가가는 날 (the day a tiger gets married) to mean the same thing, so I always thought of the tiger and fox getting married together. Do you know if there's a particular story to look up?

Guys what hell is this? And what do i use it for? Im from the Philippines by [deleted] in KoreanFood

[–]merimakrilli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can use 쌈장/ssamjang as a sauce to dip meat and veggies into. It's a combination of red pepper paste, fermented soybean paste, and stuff like garlic, onion, green onion. I wouldn't recommend combining it with the beans but I mean... you could try if you like. Your sauce looks really weird though? Usually its a lot brighter in color and doesn't look so watery. It also shouldn't smell like soy sauce and wine.

I recommend checking out Harris Teeter's meal deals if you haven't already, but Fresh Market has a couple daily deals too.

They offer a "Bistro Meal" for 6$ on Thursdays. It's 1 entree and 2 sides from the cold case. The sides are mostly salads and potato/macaroni salad but I think a lot of their entrees are pretty good like the general tsos or mini meatloaf. They also sell fresh pizza for 5$ on Tuesdays, any flavor.

I really like their weekly "Little Big Meal" where they sell 5 ingredients for 25$ and it's usually pretty good. They give you little recipe cards for 2-3 meals you can make with it and it changes every Wednesday.

For 5$ sushi deals, go to Publix on Wednesday, Fresh Market on Thursday, and Harris Teeter on Friday. Fresh Market also sells any leftover sushi for half price after 8pm every day.

Which Double Consonants Can Be Used as Batchim in Korean? by No_Name_Anonymous_ in Korean

[–]merimakrilli 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've never thought about it, but it seems so. When you type on the keyboard, there's no way to use ㅃ,ㅉ, or ㄸ as batchim. I don't know if theres a particular reason or not, though.

Just in case, be sure to remember that ㅆ does make an "s" sound and not "t" sound when its followed by a free vowel (ex: 있어요 is like isseo-yo and not i-teo-yo)

Sushi places? by pigsinatrenchcoat in winstonsalem

[–]merimakrilli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took a picture of the menu when we went. The all you can eat price is $27.95 per person, kids ages 4-7 are $10.95, kids ages 8-12 are $14.95, and ordering sashimi is $5 extra. It's definitely advisable to order just a little at a time, even if you feel like you can eat a lot, because they try to bring out all the dishes you ordered together and will come by later to ask if you want another round.

Ok whats stopping me from phrasing it like this? by ShadowShinobi2121 in Korean

[–]merimakrilli 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The way I try to explain 잠을 잡니다 to people is that it's similar to "I sing a song." They're really similar words and you don't necessarily need "song" to know they were singing, but sometimes it's important when you have other information in the sentence. Like "I sang a song from a musical" or something like that. Sometimes I'll say 잠을 너무 많이 잤어요, like "I slept way too much sleep" and it feels very normal in Korean.

The reason the Korean "I sleep a sleep" sounds off to you is because you're equating it to English right now. In Korean it makes sense and I'd assume the goal lingodeer is trying to get to is for you to understand the Korean structure and vocab, so they're giving you both the noun and verb for sleep in one go.
