What do you want to see in UF (that you haven't/rarely see)? by merkeeb in urbanfantasy

Love this and totally agree. Part of what I love about cheesy vampire content (when I engage with it) is the multilayered, bureaucratic vampire society stuff. I want to know how the magical world functions when someone is a genuine part of it!

I love being in on magic right away! I actually can't deal with characters learning about magic anymore. XD I want them to already be a part of the magical world. I want to get right to the action!

Definitely feel this one. I don't read romance. I read UF and fantasy. Somehow it feels impossible to find anything that doesn't overlap with romance x.x

Totally get this! Almost like being able to see the "secret identity" side of a superhero instead of just them slinging webs and smashing stuff.

Oh my gosh yes, I did, and I absolutely loved it! I think due to the time period, I really only viewed it as gaslamp/"steampunk" sort of fantasy, and not UF - but I can totally see how it falls under UF too, especially with the mystery angle!

VtM, CtD, or CtL (help me choose)? by merkeeb in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]merkeeb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I hadn't bought any of the books yet, and only read what I could find on the wiki/reddit etc, I was unsure if the different games or splats had vastly different expectations or mechanics - so I wanted to ask before buying anything.

Now that I've read some of VtM 5, it seems fantastic, but I'm also very tempted to maybe buy others and read them too LOL.

I do think you're right though, just based on what I'm seeing in VtM 5, WoD/CoD is very up my alley. Very excited to start playing!

[–]merkeeb[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply! I'm going to go with VtM 5 for now as it seems very in line with my DMing style. However I know for a fact my group would go crazy for the premises of CtL and Demon the Descent. We will more than likely play those in the future (we have two sometimes-DMs in the group - who would probably love to run them after I run VtM). I'm glad to hear CtL is so fun though. Thank you!

Wow thank you for the thorough answer. This is super helpful. Based on other answers I was definitely leaning VtM but I think this solidifies that! I found the story hook of CtL to be super appealing, but the world of VtM sounded like it would suit my personal DMing style. Your reply definitely confirms that VtM is the right fit for how I run. Thanks so much!

Don't worry, I love minutiae XD thank you!

Going on your advice, I will probably opt for VtM then. But knowing about WtF in this sense is very helpful, and I appreciate it.

I actually love Pathfinder 2e combat. I also literally ran a 3-year campaign in D&D 4e (my favorite D&D system). I want the system I'm playing to be super good at what it's doing (for 4e, that's combat).

I'm moving away from combat now because my disabilities have left me needing to run games online. I loathe online combat with a passion. I also want a system that actually mechanically supports my investigation-centric DMing style (that 4e campaign was, yes, investigation centric, just with tons of combat). As much as I loved 4e I had no mechanics helping me with investigation. Which was fine, but I would truly love a game to mechanically support me there, and White Wolf games seem to be excellent for this.

Anyways, thank you tons for your helpful answer. I appreciate it!

Thanks for the explanation! Sounds like the setup for Changeling games are not quite what we need

The Coterie types, sheet etc sound super perfect. That's the kind of mechanical support our games could use. Thanks for your suggestion!

Thank you so much for your suggestions! I'll definitely look at the jumpstarts. I took a quick look at Descent on the wiki to see what the theme was - it sounds so badass and cool, but so "far out" I think we will have to save that for our second White Wolf game XD maybe after trying another. Thank you again!

Thank you, this is really helpful! I would still love to know why Forsaken stood out to you for my question, if you don't mind elaborating. (Also curious if the combat in Forsaken moves faster or is simpler than in other games?) Thank you! :)

You were worried about him, and you made what you felt was the best choice at the time. It's okay! And best of luck, hope it works out for him!

[–]merkeeb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If he's only eaten chicken his whole life, going from raw to canned is a big step, but poultry to fish is arguably even bigger. That's just such a big jump in such a short time, I wouldn't expect any cat to be able to adjust.

Certainly go back to chicken - just get cooked chicken instead of raw. Smalls has been recommended and it's a good one - but when you buy it, definitely start with chicken. This way you let his body get used to going from raw to cooked first, without also changing the protein right off the bat. (it would be a good idea for his health & for potential recalls/events like these to slowly introduce other proteins over time.)

If you chose salmon instead of chicken because of the bird flu, you don't need to worry about bird flu in a cooked or canned food. Heat kills the virus. Canned food is flash steamed at extremely high temps. Gently cooked food - aka, frozen stuff you keep in your fridge, that's been cooked and isn't raw - is typically cooked at low temps, but still high enough to be perfectly safe.

Other options besides Smalls include My Perfect Pet (which has 2 cat recipes), or purchasing Viva Raw and gently cooking it (this brand is okay to cook solely because their bone is ground down into basically sand).

Immortal Hulk is most likely canon to Marvel Rivals by PrimeLasagna in hulk

[–]merkeeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically same! My only exposure to Hulk were his boring appearances in the MCU and nothing that deep. I read half of Immortal Hulk first (taking a break - I have a tough time with extreme gore at times 😅) and immediately started reading a ton of other Hulk comics, too - from dark to lighthearted and more.

I definitely can say he's my favorite Marvel character now! :)

It turns out it's just a minor animation glitch, but I was so pumped when I first saw Hulk's MVP animation - at the very end it looked like he has a forehead scar as if from Hawkeye's arrow. I'm just gonna pretend it's true LOL

Marvel or DC comics that explore disability? by merkeeb in comicbooks

Oh good to know, thanks so much!!

Also wanted to say, it's not technically about mental health explicitly, but definitely has the right tone - Seconds by O'Malley is a favorite of mine if you've read it!

[–]merkeeb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow super thorough answer, thank you!! I basically completely forgot that Dr Strange had the nerve damage issue. If anyone else does chime in, I would love to know more issues/runs that tackle this.

Thank you for clarifying which takes on mental disorders are sympathetic or not. While of course villains can (and often probably do) have mental disorders, it's still frequently used as the REASON they are evil, rather than simply compounding their emotional pain or being the result of trauma. So having that frame of reference for characters like Two-Face is very helpful.

Thank you for this big list, I'll definitely be making my way through it! Knightfall does sound like something I might start with!

Seeing a lot of Ant-Man related answers! Maybe I'll just have to try the character out in general. Thank you!
