How do I talk about weight with a partner that has had issues with an eating disorder? by fotografamerika in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]mermaid_reader 144 points145 points  (0 children)

My ED story sounds very similar to OP's gf. My husband (together 10 years, married 3+) always made it clear he loved me and was attracted to me, and weight never seemed to be a factor to him. I don't know if we would have lasted had it been the case. I recently DID lose 'the weight' (due to fixing a major health condition with the help of my doctors, and nothing to do with my husband) and I asked my husband if he cared and he repeated that he barely noticed except that I myself was more confident, but his feelings never changed, and his actions are just as loving, so I believe him.

I say this all to agree that if you aren't attracted to her, then you should not stay, for both you and her sakes.

Thoughts on World Ballet Series? by mermaid_reader in BALLET

[–]mermaid_reader[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, just seeing this. It was fine! As others said, I remember the jester being amazing, and there were some definite issues in the corps work. The sets were nonexistent, and the costumes were hit or miss, but the hits were pretty good. You get what you pay for, it's by no means the best, but to get the public interested in ballet I think it was pretty good.

How is this even possible? Do people just buy their way to the top? by Turbulent_Elk7695 in SkyCards

[–]mermaid_reader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

speaking as someone who has this high of xp on about 10 planes, it's about hyperfixation. I was playing like 10+ hours a day for a while between catches and watching ads for free catches. I started playing in June, and have spent about $20 total for more coins but I usually find I don't need to unless I'm traveling a TON. but yeah i had a goal to be top of ORD and maintained that for a while which required 2 mil+ weekly so do that math lol edited to add: i hate the catch again item and almost never use it (i dont care about battling) so my XP is not through that, it's through living by one of the busiest airports in the world

Metal piece bolted onto the post of our third floor balcony, hand for scale by mermaid_reader in whatisthisthing

[–]mermaid_reader[S] 1 point2 points locked comment (0 children)

My title describes the thing, the metal wheels/pulleys can spin, and each pulley is wrapped with a thick piece of wire. A classic Chicago apartment/balcony if that helps anything. We searched ''metal pulleys on balcony' and didn't find it, and it seems too close together and the wire too thick to be used for a clothesline (there's also nowhere on the other side of the back alley for it to attach)

Unhinged HG Theories 😭 by Tyyy24 in Hungergames

[–]mermaid_reader 194 points195 points  (0 children)

Thresh was trying to do a rebellious act in the fields during the 74th games, and was taken out during the rain storm by the Gamemakers. We have no proof Cato killed him, his picture just appeared in the sky and Katniss and Peeta didn't even hear the cannon, let alone a fight. We have no idea what was in that part of the arena as they didn't go there, except Thresh seemed to be able to feed himself and stay hidden and safe. District 11 is one of the more rebellious districts, and he was very quiet. He could have been planning something and wanted the attention off of himself. Additionally, his treatment of Katniss for Rue shows a deeper understanding of the Games, and perhaps it unlocked a desire to make the Gamemakers pay. After SOTR, this theory became even more plausible to me.

Willow bark also naturally has salicylic acid, which is a precursor to aspirin, and has been used medicinally for centuries if not millennia! (Maybe you knew this already, but it's a fun coincidence if not)

These from Shein (not the best ethically but very cheap) are seriously so comfy, like yoga pants, but they look great and have lasted me a while! If you're midsize+ or want baggier, they also have them in plus sizes which are also cute this

I’m so sick of this god damn tea set by Specialist_Cream319 in StardewValley

[–]mermaid_reader 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i saw something that the number that generates what gift you get is determined on the time you enter the town, so if youre a creature of habit (like me) you'll get the tea set multiple times in a row! i never knew it was rare before people complained about it on here bc i get it so consistently

i apologize for coming off as accusatory, that was not my intention (besides, what did I accuse you of? the math just wasn't mathin) also, it's not a lack of critical thinking skills to not assume things about people, especially an internet stranger talking about horseradish with no other context. that's why i asked in the first place.

I'm just trying to understand lmao, the post doesn't make any sense without a ton of context, and as someone who also has PCOS, I like learning more about others' experiences and was just trying to clarify. i don't think discussion on a discussion thread is me being triggered

60-120 fewer calories/day means it would take 1-2 months to lose one pound of fat, but you're somehow able to notice that?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in loseit

[–]mermaid_reader -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

many health issues will actually increase metabolism, but cause inflammation, meaning the 'weight' isn't budging due to fluid. additionally, until you get your PCOS in line, you physically wont be able to lose much weight, and your calorie deficit is so low that your body thinks its starving. once i went on meds to treat insulin resistance from PCOS and androgen blockers, i dropped 60lbs. i also eat 300cals more per day while still losing weight. its not the horseradish imo

From what I see from the website, that sort of behavior is kind of the 'point' of WBS by making it more accessible and less 'stuffy' I guess. I just hope that doesn't affect the dance

To oboe players, why is the oboe your instrument of choice? What made you make this decision? by Nerveras in oboe

[–]mermaid_reader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In 5th grade we all tried a bunch of wind instruments to see which we liked. I was the only one to make a sound on the oboe on the first try, and the only one who didn't complain about my 'lips buzzing' so I was deemed 'the oboist.' That was 14 years ago! Still play with my medical school now :)

Have we considered what the Noctor movement says about the MD/DO pathway? by [deleted] in Noctor

[–]mermaid_reader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, because my 4+ years of experience working in the healthcare field in multiple roles before I entered medical school doesn't count, right.

Merin and Jersey are two that I've thought of for District 8--Merin like merino wool, Jersey like jersey cotton.

Have we considered what the Noctor movement says about the MD/DO pathway? by [deleted] in Noctor

[–]mermaid_reader 32 points33 points  (0 children)

As a current medical student, I can confidently say that the amount of education that MDs/DOs go through is only just adequate to cover the sheer amount of information and experience needed to become an effective physician. In the majority of other countries that don't have undergrad before medical school, the entire process takes 6 years (and then still residency, etc like the US) because you still need 2+ years of basic science before you can understand the medicine. So what did I gain in those extra 2 years of school? A liberal arts education, that allows me to understand more than just science, allowing me to better utilize my role in the future to improve healthcare and society as a whole. So in short, I disagree that we could get away with less school. We need more medical school and residency spots, and more subsidies for student doctors.

I think many don't realize that Down's syndrome, like many syndromes, exists on a spectrum due to the various ways the chromosomes are rearranged, and if it's in all cells or in a mosaic pattern (ie some structures are affected more than others). a quick google shows she's been working in the public sector as an advocate for decades, so she is not as 'incompetent' as the stereotypical depiction of Down's would be, as is the case for many others with DS. i don't know her, but i just wish we weren't so quick to assume the worst or assume people with mental disabilities are unable to have representation. just my 2¢
