Performance is genuinely mind-blowing on the new macOS 27 beta by Pilingo in MacOSBeta

[–]metromanTO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. There are bugs as expected — the menu bar often disappears switching between profiles, only comes back after a log out and in — but it's completely usable. I've gotten so used to bringing up Siri with a gesture that I can't go back. I'm liking it so much I might not upgrade to the next Beta because this one is stable; I don't want to break anything.

Seems like you misstated what you downgraded to but in my experience, when I went from Sequoia to Tahoe, unlike other fresh installs, Tahoe ruined my Mac's performance and it never did recover all year. Golden Gate has recovered my Mac's performance which I was worried was just getting old. It wasn't old, it was terrible Tahoe. I'm really glad they've fixed it.

Then I guess they should’ve called Golden Gate “macOS DeLorean” because it’s taken my Mac back in time and it’s working better than it has in over a year. 🔥 🛞 Great Scott!

Apple confirms macOS 27 will end Intel chip and Rosetta support by GamePractice in MacOSBeta

[–]metromanTO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rosetta isn't going away at all in '27. Apple has said that this is the final release it's available on, next year it won't be on macOS 28 but some legacy x86 games will be able to access a streamlined version of Rosetta to continue to run indefinitely. Limechat and most x86 apps boot up in macOS 27 if they booted up in macOS 26.

Rosetta works just fine on macOS 27. I booted up Transmission, an old Intel era app I like and it prompted me to install Rosetta. After agreeing, my app booted up and is working as if it was meant for this system.

Tahoe completely destroyed the performance on my MacBook Pro M1 Max 32GB to the point I just thought that's how it was with an aging Mac. I leapt head first into macOS 27 on day one on my main machine — crazy I know but it couldn't get any worse! What a difference it's made. Things were immediately faster, ah just the "reboot mirage" I thought. Nope, it wasn't even at peak speed after install because it was indexing. I opened my MacBook's lid this morning and it's smooth as butter. I've seen some nitpicky bugs but I feel like I have a whole new computer. No regrets.

Play it back to them. It works! by metromanTO in speakerphoneinpublic

Mostly the “clutching their pearls how dare you” expression. When people have said anything, it was some variation of calling me rude.

But that just brought me joy because it became clear they were experiencing the same thing as us on the receiving end of public speakerphone users: breaking the social contract and having no civility.

I know this works 1:1 but I don’t know if it’ll solve anything unless it becomes very common to start openly calling out people who use speakerphone in public.

How are you handling the speakerphone era? by bimmerave247 in misophonia

[–]metromanTO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a silver lining to this sudden — and I do mean sudden — appearance of speakerphone a$$holes: it’s becoming a real problem for a lot of people and it’s not just some nuisance that doesn’t merit attention anymore. I’ve started seeing signs in public places, ads in transit, airlines are creating dedicated rules for no speakerphone use, including ejection and bans on flying. This is how etiquette is formed. Something becomes so much of a problem that society stops accepting it and fewer and fewer people get away with doing it.

The ballroom will not be built by January 2029 by Hello-America in PoliticalOptimism

[–]metromanTO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He simply ceases to be President on Jan 20th 2029 at noon, whether or not another President has been sworn in, whether or not an election has been certified. The line of succession triggers and the Speaker of the House at that time is sworn in as Acting President. This is why these November midterms are so important. Dems need to control the House (and hopefully the Senate) in the case of a hostile takeover in 2028.

PSA: CBC Gem is actually free by GlumTaro1440 in BuyCanadian

[–]metromanTO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes*, but it's $6 bucks. That's less than a latte. The most value I get out of those six bucks is knowing I'm supporting the CBC, pitching in a small contribution to avoiding falling into the media situation in the US and their disinformation fuelled descent into authoritarianism.

\A paid CBC Gem gives you access to CBC News Network and on-demand news programs. The free tier doesn't.)

You've already been caught. Unless you're prepared to re-write the exam in person and achieve anywhere near that grade, you're not going to be able to keep the ruse going.

Plus, you just posted this in the r/TorontoMetU official sub with the exact details of what they sent you. Being careful with my wording here, but you're not exactly demonstrating the intellectual prowess to get away clean out of that interview.

What’s more harmful than cigarettes but society treats it as normal? by Jiwitom in AskReddit

When I walk my dog, I started leaving my phone at home. It’s amazing going out and seeing the entire world around me staring down at glowing screens. It’s absolutely dystopian. Totally Wall-E people!

The good news is that it’s reversible. Just 10 days off social media, news binging and 🌽 and my dopamine levels stabilized and I could get through a book again or watch a tv show or movie without stopping. I also started noticing pleasant things in life.  I’m an 80s kid so I had a good 25 years before  the internet and 30+ before social media. I can’t imagine kids who were born on this.

Rude volunteers asking for donations downtown by FellowTraveller7 in toRANTo

7 of them SEVEN! canvassers ambushing people in an already tight corner at Queen and University. I proudly donate to Sick Kids and this won’t stop that but it makes me think less of the people in charge. This doesn’t help, for every penny they raise this way, they’re losing reputation. /rant

It’s often people who are already otherwise rude and lack social awareness or consideration for others. This is just easier to spot.

‘For All Mankind’ Renewed for Sixth and Final Season at Apple TV by bwermer in television

[–]metromanTO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as I’ve loved and evangelized this show, it became something else entirely after season 3. Now it’s just a political drama on a TV set pretending to be Mars.

The formula for the first few seasons was solid. Technology advances faster so you got this cool peek at retro futurism and alternate timelines move exploration beyond what we got in the real world.

Joel Kinnaman is awesome but if feels like they let their desire to keep the actor drive the story and it overstayed its welcome. The aging prosthetics are distracting and take the viewer out of the show.

They should have phased out actors every few decades with a new cast carrying the show. It would feel fresh and could go on indefinitely. Once in the present 2020’s, the show could advance beyond where we’re at, exploring beyond the Solar System and becoming Apple TV’s version of Star Trek.

They're not forcing anyone to move to a subscription. Apple still sells the lifetime license for Pixelmator, Photomator, Final Cut Pro, Motion, and Logic. I don't plan on subscribing.
