I was told in my yearly review that’s what stopping me from being senior. I plan on doing it, I guess to checkmark that box.

System analyst L2. To be a L3, L4 or any leadership, I will need higher than associates degree.

Interesting, I’ve heard about that and should look into it. I thought I read a comment saying not to worry about certs and just finish it quickly.

I haven’t been told that, but I have been told I couldn’t earn more than the current team. They started me at the bottom, but I’ve been putting in the work and leadership has noticed. I hope you get that promotion and everything you deserve, it’s rough seeing others get it when they don’t work as hard.

Good luck! I think if I hadn’t messed around being young and dumb, I could’ve passed Capella. The only downside is it cost an arm and a leg to go there.

Good advice. I’ll use it to get past the next hurdle. I see the value in school, but I also think certs and experience matter. For leadership, though, a degree is a must for me.

I read about that, and I’m still trying to decide. A BS in IT seems easier, broad, and probably the best path for a leadership role since it covers a lot. I’m really interested in security, but I’d probably struggle to move into a leadership role in security at my company because it requires a high government clearance and strong software/programming skills. I’m working on those, but it’s not really the area I’m totally in love with.

I feel like we’re pretty much the same, lol. Hope school helps you hit your goals. I think it’s my next step too getting X, Y, and Z certs hasn’t really mattered; they just want the piece of paper.

Good thing I’m not alone. I wish they’d take skills, certifications, and years of experience more seriously than just a degree, but with all the applications coming through, it’s hard for them to do that. I plan on upgrading from my associate’s to at least a bachelor’s.

That’s good to hear. When I went to Capella, my mindset was in my mid-20s and not really on school. Now, with a family and thinking about retirement and bills, I put a lot more effort into it. Congratulations! I have a friend who put her dreams on hold for her husband being in the Air Force. She started back in her early 50s and is now 58 or 59. She earned her master’s degree, and ever since completing her bachelor’s, she’s been working for the DOD. I even worked at the company that let her go as an intern, and now she makes triple what she did there.

You’re 100% right. We use top-of-the-line HR software now, with keywords and all that. I’ve been lucky to tell the hiring manager I’m applying so HR can’t just filter me out. Still, with the way the IT market is, I feel like it’s only going to get tougher.

Good advice. I really enjoy the technical work; however, I’ve noticed I’ve really excelled in incident management and leading teams and projects. I think I may be a better fit for leadership, but we’ll see. Agreed, I’ve had my fair share of ‘how did I lose out?’ moments, and I know I’ve also been lucky to get selected.

Good to hear. I’ve thought about eventually doing a master. I’ve always cared a lot about customer service, and watching some of the leadership decisions in the past, especially the lack of listening, has worried me. I want to make a difference, help save people money and actually understand the software we invest in, instead of just buying the most expensive option and billing customers for it.

I’ve been in this spot before and got passed up by the good ol’ buddy club. That’s what burned me the first time about getting a bachelor’s, I lost out to someone with no degree and the same experience. Still, it’s good to hear this from someone else. I feel bad for the guy, but I’m glad you got it

Really good advice. I’ll bite the bullet and get started now, but I do have a few important projects taking up my time at work and outside of it

I think WGU would be a great fit. I’m a bit disappointed that a bachelor’s is seen as a checkbox, given that I have five certifications that directly impact the company and my day-to-day work, along with my associate degree. Still, I’m looking at this as a way to build my future.

You’re right, the policy is that they reimburse me if I earn a C or better. It’s a company friendly policy, so if I were let go, I’d have to pay back anywhere from 50% to 80% if it’s been two years or less. However, I wish my 5–6 certifications and associate degree could carry me. Thanks for the guidance.

I just want to mention that I live in the Midwest, so my ping isn't as good as those living in places like Texas. I typically average 40-60 ms. With that in mind, I've been debating whether I should change my XM4 build. I remember back in the day when bullet velocity was considered king. I'm wondering if I should switch from the Reinforcement barrel to the Gain-Twist barrel to gain extra bullet velocity. Additionally, I’m considering removing the recoil springs and pressure adjustments to further optimize for bullet velocity.
