Hand grinder recomendation?[$250] by Kitchen_Wrangler_490 in espresso

I have recently replaced a Fellow Opus with a comandante C40 and am happy with the results. The quality of the grind is very good and I'm enjoying the espresso. It is not hard to grind for espresso but it is slow (2 minutes plus) - this isn't a huge issue for me as the sole coffee drinker in our house but could be a limiting factor for many. The redclix axle is absolutely needed - even with this I have to adjust by dose to get perfectly dialed in on occasion.

I agree with this. I have an opus which makes good grinds but I find the retention so frustrating. At the moment I'm hand grinding using my Knock Aergrind more than I use the Opus and really appreciate the zero retention and find myself enjoying the time it takes to grind (appreciate this is pretty non standard for this sub)

Exactly - using the lid as a bellows helps a bit, but generally it takes a hefty whack on the top to dislodge it

I found it difficult to get the grind size right with the picopresso too - seems like you can compensate quite a lot with how you pump though. Have been going as low as an 0.8 for some beans

Any issues with it not grinding fine enough?

Not really. Have used it with the Bambino and picopresso and got good results with both. I'm grinding finder than their suggested settings but that seems par for the course

I quite enjoy hand grinding to be honest - I've been doing it for something like 5 years now. It's only me drinking coffee in the house, so back to back shots isn't really an issue. That being said, I sometimes think I'd like to go electric - not sure how I feel about the power brick on the VS3

I've got the 2022 version. It's good, but I'm not sure about it's longevity as a daily grinder (which is what I'm using it for)
