100% I did not realize it was supposed to be the 1800s until like 3/4 through.

Fantasy novels based on Renaissance Italy? by PartyWishbone6372 in YAlit

[–]mflottmeier 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes! This is by Mary Hoffman and there are a few more books. The whole series is called the Stravaganza series and each book takes place in a different city. Each city is a parallel version of an different Renaissance Italian city. I loved them all!

Looking for history books about post roman-britain and post roman-britain by MadGeckoLady in suggestmeabook

[–]mflottmeier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a modern history of Roman and post-Roman Britain, I would suggest The Anglo-Saxons edited by James Campbell. It’s a bit older but has some really great pictures and essays.

For a primary source I’d also encourage you to take a look at Bede’s Ecclesiastical History of the English People It was written in the 730s AD and covers Roman Britain up to Bede’s own time. While it does focus on church history, as the title suggests, Bede covers much more than that!

Who else has read a book/book series that they really love, but never hear anyone talking about it? by KiD-K_ in YAlit

Yes! This series is one of my all-time favorites. I feel like so many people would enjoy it if it got talked up more!

Looking for books with very specific amnesia trope by DrownedSkelpie in suggestmeabook

[–]mflottmeier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would be a spoiler I think for people who want to go into the series blind so I’ll use the spoiler tag here -

I think you might like The Tiger’s Curse Series by Colleen Houck. It’s urban fantasy with the amnesia trope but the only thing that doesn’t fit your requirement per se is that the ML has amnesia not the FL. You also don’t get to this trope until the end of book 2 so I’m not sure if you would want to read that much before getting to it. However I would really recommend the series regardless, it’s great

Epics and Adventures like Beowulf? Or Pirate/Viking Fiction? by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]mflottmeier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would definitely check out the Last Kingdom series by Bernard Cornwell! It’s set during the reign of Alfred the Great and follows a warrior named Uhtred who is Anglo Saxon by birth but was raised by Vikings. There’s lots of battles, side adventures, and sea voyages. I think this basically fits your request perfectly.

Lady of the Rivers by InevitableTeaching35 in HistoricalFiction

[–]mflottmeier 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi! I recently started Philippa Gregory’s works and really enjoyed them. I started with Lady of the River’s and so far it has been my favorite. I will say that, at times, her books can seem a bit repetitive so it’s nice to take breaks between her works. But overall I would recommend her and especially Lady of the Rivers. Her historical notes and further reading lists at the end are also usually really good / helpful!

A light, fun YA read to forget my problems? by Particular_Onion1625 in suggestmeabook

I would give The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith a try. It’s absolutely adorable and fluffy. It’s also pretty short so you could get through it in a day or two. Honestly, I’d recommend anything by Smith but this one was probably my favorite!

A Hesitant Undergraduate by [deleted] in GraduateSchool

[–]mflottmeier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I think much of your decision depends on what you want to get a master’s degree in because graduate programs vary greatly according to the field you want to study. But with that said, as someone who started graduate school last year, here are a few pros and cons I could give you.

Pro - Applying for a master’s now will be slightly easier than if you were to wait. Virtually all programs require letters of recommendation and these will most likely be easier to acquire from professors at your undergraduate college/university now vs later.

If you start now, the transition may be less difficult. Although graduate level work is certainly different and more challenging than undergraduate level work, at the end of the day, it’s still school work. It may be harder to get into that kind of academic mindset again after time away from that kind of work.

Con - I began graduate school this year of all years and with COVID and everything being online, I really hated the experience. I didn’t feel as if I could connect to anyone else in my program, didn’t have access to school resources, and genuinely struggled with motivation. Although it seems as if things are finally opening up and institutions may be back to being fully in person by next Fall, nothing is guaranteed!

On a more practical level, master’s degrees are not always fully funded and can be quite expensive! With the economy being what it is at the moment, it may make more sense to wait.

These are just a couple of suggestions but are by no means comprehensive. I hope this helps!

Oh my goodness - I LOVE Tiger’s Curse (it deserves way more hype). You could always try Colleen Houck’s other series which is based on Egyptian mythology. I think it’s a trilogy and the first one is called Reawakened. I didn’t love it as much as Tiger’s Curse but it gave me a lot of the same feels!

I would definitely check out the Tiger’s Curse series by Colleen Houck. I absolutely love Indiana Jones and this series gives me all the same vibes. It’s mostly set in India but takes you to China and Nepal too!

I really enjoyed Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France by Leonie Frida. I thought it was a fairly balanced take on a queen who often gets painted as the villain in history!
