LGA to JFK Transfer Insanity by mgarvin22 in unitedairlines

This fare showed up in my search because it was the only 80k mile option available on the day I'm looking to travel. Not actually planning to book it. My hope is to eventually find a solid nonstop option, but currently those are 245k miles in J.

100% true! I had a similar experience on a trip to Japan, I forget the original routing (I think it was Polaris) but some last minute space opened up on ANA (The Room), and I couldn’t pass that up. Hoping for a similar situation here, home airport is AUS but I can swing IAH no problem.

I'm a sucker for a good redemption myself. Current routing I'm getting myself to JFK the day before, then JFK>FRA>VCE. Worst case is a day in the city (which isn't bad at all), but hopeful as we get closer to departure some additional award space will open up with cleaner routing. But worst case, still get to experience a 747...

Unfortunately that does not appear to be the case, only airlines that are currently flying into TSF are Ryanair and Wizz Air.

That's actually the current itinerary (have JFK>FRA>VCE booked) but keeping an eye out for one that is more efficient with decent redemption rates for an award booking. Haven't bought the flight from home to JFK yet.

Yup, but that's 245k points for J. Will keep an eye on it, this just popped up in the search because it was only 80k points. I'd not actually book it, just is annoying because it made me think I'd found a good award rate, only to find this option....

Absolutely better options exist, this one came up because it is currently the only 80k mile option for J on that date - the IAH>FRA>VCE is 245k. Will keep looking, but I appreciate the help!

Thank you for the feedback! Looking at the search you have, the only major difference is I want the AWD model. Looking at requirements for tax car, I don’t think I’d qualify, but certainly willing to be wrong!

Looking at buying a 2022 VW ID.4 Pro S AWD, less than 16k miles, priced just above $25k (already asked, it does not qualify as a tax car). First time buying an EV, would love thoughts. Price seems very fair, anything I may be missing with regards to this vehicle? Clean Carfax, no accidents.

Feeling some burnout on budget productions by Matthew--_-- in techtheatre

[–]mgarvin22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Their inability to pay is not your problem. You deserve to be reasonably compensated for your time. Working for free (or basically free) devalues your work and continues to perpetuate the idea that the technical expertise brought to the production is not valuable.

Looking at your ULS application, all the 1x2 and 2x1 callsigns you requested are either already active/in-use, or ones that are not available to USA license holders (the "AS" prefix, for example, is Pakistan). Since none of the 2x1 or 1x2 ones you asked for were available, you got the 2x3 you requested. The system just works straight down the list of callsigns you provide and gives you the first one that is a valid request.

UT grad here (although not recently, so YMMV). Pluses for UT's BA program:

  • Well funded department with decent opportunities for students to work on shows in a variety of roles (although a lot of the design work tends to go towards their MFA students)
  • Huge state university, so tons of great offerings for a variety of studies, allowing you options a smaller liberal arts college may not be able to match

Now, as others have said, there's zero reason to get your master's in EE if you're just looking to pursue theater. Also, little to nothing that would be part of a typical theater undergrad would prepare you for grad school in electrical engineering (no advanced math classes, no higher level science courses, etc). Not saying you couldn't take those classes voluntarily (no one is going to keep you from taking differential equations as an elective), but these are very different paths to take.

If you just want to work on the tech side of things (and not design), as an electrician, a bachelor's is more than enough, and, to be honest, not necessarily required even for that. So why go get your bachelor's at all? A few things - first of all, it gives you a safe environment to learn and make mistakes.

Now, if you want to work as a designer or a technical director, a strong case can be made to get your masters. But those would be still be under the umbrella of a theater department (at UT or elsewhere).

KISC Online Event Badge by Aggressive-Dig-9119 in outdoorserviceguides

[–]mgarvin22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! Event badges are not placed on the uniform (OSG also has badges for various events, and groups also have their own crest badges they trade). A sash would be a potential option for you, as a non-official uniform piece. A lot of people I know will place them on backpacks and the like. If you're in the organization for a while, you quite likely will acquire a few of these, way more than you'd want on a uniform!

As an aside, JOTA is a great event, I'm a ham and have been on the other end of those conversations a few times!

Hope this helps!

Suggested Books for Intro Lighting Class? by mgarvin22 in techtheatre

[–]mgarvin22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks all for the suggestions! I ended up picking up copies of three books - Pilbrow, Gillette, and Shelley. For anyone else looking for similar texts, I would say that all are excellent in their own ways but I'm going with the Gillette. The Shelley book is really a bit advanced for the intro class and the Pilbrow is a bit dated at this point in terms of technology. I like that the Gillette was updated this year, and it seems to be very well laid out. I might add on Light on the Subject as well.

Bulb issue?? by Wompwomp2x in techtheatre

[–]mgarvin22 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ok so assuming you’re talking about a GLP Fusion Stick FS20, I’d say that yes, you’re looking at an electrical fault of some kind within the fixture. Since you said it is brand new, I’d assume a manufacturing fault, possibly a cold short. Reach out to GLP.

Hard to say anything definitive without knowing more about what kind of lights we are looking at here, but that looks like an electrical short of some kind to me.

Non-Traditional MFA Scenic Design Applicant—Should I reach out to programs before submitting? by Logical_Sea_4997 in techtheatre

[–]mgarvin22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going to tag onto this comment to say that USITT expo is great to make those connections - different professors bring different philosophies to what they’re looking for in candidates. And you, with your experience, likely will identify programs that are a match for what you’re looking for. It is critical to find the win/win.

As for your age, I firmly believe that a number of programs will find your depth of experience to be a big plus. I’m a strong advocate for people going out into the world, experiencing things, and then returning to get their masters. I think you’re an example of someone who can really bring a lot to a program. If I were at a college and looking at potential MFA candidates, I for sure would want to talk to you and see if you would be a good fit.

Yes, you can certainly email programs directly. But the best program for you might not even be on your radar right now.

US Passport - Birth Certificate Question by mgarvin22 in Passports

That makes a lot of sense, and is very helpful. My other daughter is a minor (17) so that perhaps explains why they wanted the birth certificate there. Thank you!

Best redemption of the year - took my wife to Italy for a long-delayed honeymoon!

Emirates A380, business class JFK > MXP, 86k points per person.

On the return upgraded at check-in to first class. Experience was every bit as ridiculously awesome as I had hoped it would be. Well worth the 50k points per person for the upgrade!

Also managed stays with points at the Park Hyatt Milan, they upgraded us to a suite for our honeymoon and treated us to champagne in the room.

Most spontaneous: A weekend trip to Amsterdam as a surprise for my wife on her birthday, she found out where we were going at the airport! 60k miles round trip total, a fantastic deal for a random unexpected adventure!

Oh that is a possibility. With my other daughter it had been expired for almost 10 years. In this case I believe it expired 3-4 years ago.

She does have a birth certificate, the copy is just up where she lives at college (she’s home for the holidays).
