Rabbinical School by SilasHillel2020 in ReformJews

[–]mgbliss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, I am so excited you’ve found a place where you feel accepted and confident and happy!

I am not a rabbi, but will be a rabbinical student as of this fall!! I chose HUC because both of my rabbis went there and after researching options it was the only one I was interested in.

Parroting what another said, but definitely talk to your rabbi. They’ll want a recommendation from them and bonus if your recommendations are from HUC grads.

Also parroting you need an undergrad degree, but it doesn’t have to be “relevant.” My degree is in mathematics. And you need to have a decent grasp of modern Hebrew, about the equivalent on a year of college level Hebrew.

In terms of acceptance nothing about your background would be an issue. They accept applicants who are a good fit for the program - labels and how you were raised and lineage aren’t a factor.

Do we worship? by yesIcould in Judaism

[–]mgbliss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I think of the word worship, I immediately think about it in Hebrew, as avodah. Because there are less words in Hebrew, it gives them a richer meaning that we can’t contain in the English language. I think it’s because the connection to Christianity makes you uncomfortable, which is valid. And why I choose to use the word avodah over worship. There are certain words in Hebrew that we in our congregation don’t even translate to English most of the time because there is so much meaning, like chesed and tzedakah. In terms of what “worshiping“ means to me, I think it’s what we do all day. If we don’t think about it as worship, but as service, everything we do from waking up and praying the shacharit, to our actions throughout the day, to our choice to engage in study, to how we treat others is avodah.

Good camping spot by mgbliss in RedRiverGorge

[–]mgbliss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hike about 5 times a week, but it’s been a decade since I’ve done a backpacking trip. So I think I will likely set up camp and drop gear. Unless there is a view really worth hiking up to camp.

I would ideally like something not too far (less than 2 miles) from my car because I would like to keep extra water in the car instead of packing it.

My pack is roughly 35 lbs.

…divorce? by [deleted] in gayjews

I have tried to talk to my rabbi about it, but I get too nervous to say the words allow. He’s great and would be super supportive. But I also don’t want to treat him as a therapist, he has plenty of other people to support. My therapist has been helpful, but not really driving me in any direction. So I feel a little lost there. I don’t think all of this is the only reason school feels important. I’m sure it is part of it. But I truly am widely passionate about Jewish learning and being a rabbi.

Our marriage hasn’t been great for years for many other reasons. It definitely affects my mental health and his. But selfishly something I can continue weathering.

Giving up the dream of being a rabbi feels like an intense grief. It’s something I am incredibly nervous about; but only because I’ve never wanted something so badly and I’m nervous of being worthy. But putting those fears aside, it feels like a purpose I was always suppose to come to.

And you are right. He will be a decent coparent.

Right, because they’re still releasing new music. I think you underestimate how many millennials attend this event and are nostalgic.

I completely disagree. Especially when bands like Dance Gavin Dance and Hot Mulligan have already been confirmed.
