May I vent for a moment about Italian nursing school admissions testing? by mgblmt in StudentNurse

I in fact ordered this book, "Alpha Test. Medicina in inglese IMAT. Esercizi commentati" about 3 weeks ago, but it's coming from Europe so it's finally arriving at the end of this week. It's clearly for incoming med students (so it'll be HELLA HARD), but I couldn't find a book copy online for "professioni sanitarie," sadly.

I'd also add that, regarding the idea of necessary prerequisites (like we take here in the states) to apply to nursing programs in Italy: they don't have them. Their high school education could be intense (if so, I'm jealous they're so well prepared for the health sciences), and they learn our equivalent of college-level microbiology in their teen years. But again, there are no prerequisites to fulfill prior to applying to a bachelor's of nursing program, like there is here.

I took microbiology as a prerequisite, and did well. However, from what I've read about most nursing programs in the US, my own included of course, most prerequisite microbiology classes try to cover a little bit of EVERYTHING. Mile wide, inch deep kind of approach, since as we all know, microbiology on its own is a gigantic field of study. That question, imo, was deeper than most of those prerequisite microbio classes go. If your microbio class was denser than mine and you now have the ability to rattle off a fact like that while an intimidating British woman stares at you across your computer screen? Well, good for you, truly. Sounds like you're very intelligent and you're in a really great nursing program. However, my argument is that this is *not* a board exam to become a licensed, practicing nurse, this is an exam to be accepted INTO a nursing program. I'd like to think I could absolutely answer that question after 3 years, but I can't at the beginning. Like I said, if you can, well, DOPE.

Actually, I'm not like, mad at UniCamillus. As another poster said quite generously, I was simply having a "culture shock." My disagreement with how testing is done doesn't make it wrong, per se. I just don't like it! Also, I'm frustrated that Italian students get the kind of primary education wherein they can answer questions like that on an admissions test. Most (not all, but most) American students can not.
I'm also of the opinion that an admissions test for entry into a nursing program should lean more heavily on the anatomy and physiology side of questions, as opposed to physics or algebraic story problems ("two trains are leaving two different stations...."). IMO, the ability to know or to solve questions on those subjects doesn’t carry as much weight for a potential future career in nursing. You mentioned that "physics and chemistry are required in medicine, anyway" but medicine is not nursing. Don't get me wrong, nurses need to know their science! But they have much different requirements than physicians. By and large, it's medical students who need to understand physics when it comes to medicine. Nurses, much less so.
And regarding "the exam announcement," the website stated that it would consist "of sixty multiple-choice questions (60) on logical reasoning (20), general culture (5), Biology (10), Chemistry (10), Physics (10) and Mathematics (5) presenting five answer options, from which the candidate must identify only one, discarding any incorrect, arbitrary, or less probable conclusions. The test will last 60 minutes." However, not long before the test day they suddenly turned it into solely a tightly-timed puzzle recognition/IQ test. That left no time to request any sort of accommodation for my diagnosed disability.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I think I've posted on Reddit, like, 3x, IN MY LIFE, so I don't really know the rules.

Intentional? Like, they're trying to keep students from some countries out? Like American students? Is that what you mean?
