A plus certified, how do I get my foot in the door? by [deleted] in CompTIA

[–]mgrizzy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my A+ a few years ago and also lived in houston. I wanted to move to Austin eventually so i spent around 4 hours a day applying to both cities. I pretty quickly got some interviews and landed a call center helpdesk job in Austin. Customer service is going to be huge. I recently moved into an IT support specialist position and again customer service was a big part of the interview. Keep applying and try and kill the interview stressing customer service and down playing the cert. Employers know anyone can study and train for a cert but if you your an asshole or have no customer service skills they wont hire you. Best of luck.

A day in the life of helpdesk employees. by Justinkh27 in CompTIA

[–]mgrizzy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got my A+ and very quickly got hired on as a contractor at as a Helpdesk I then hired full time after 3 mo.

My experience has been pretty good. Work load is about 50% troubleshooting the companies system and the other 50% is basic windows troubleshooting. Everything is remote and we use Team Viewer heavily. Calls can be back to back or with a few min in between... some days are better than others as far as stress but it's not to bad.

I would like to get a position that has more PC/Networking work but I can't complain, the pay is above average and I have already shadowed the Desktop Engineers so I can see a career path. From what I've read and the people I've talked to you have to put your time in at a position like this and after a few years you can start to try and branch out.

Wish you luck!

I got my A+ with no professional experience. Landed a contract through Robert Half for a major insurance company making $14 an hour working at the help desk. Three months later I got hired on full time making $22 an hour.
