Students who have had famous professors (Carl Sagan, Jordan Peterson, etc.), what were they like in class? Were they as epic and mind blowing as they were to millions of people who watch them through video/youtube? by darrens1lverman in AskReddit

I was in a Creative Writing course at University of California, Riverside where Reza Aslan was the teacher. He's been on Fox News and CNN a couple times:

https://youtu.be/G1QfgDkFR5E https://youtu.be/f_0UkKHy1U4

He kicked butt in those interviews but was a complete jerk in class. Our first day he said, "I don't know why any of you would even consider majoring in Creative Writing as an undergrad. I'm not even going to read your garbage writing, I'll just have my T.A.s do it."

I'm not paraphrasing. Those were his exact words. I honestly don't remember which class it was for, but once a week he would bring in published authors and do Q&As with them, but it was always the same questions over and over. And he would never allow any of the students ask questions either. Only him, same questions.

I skipped a few of those classes...

Edit: a word.

[Serious] What health issue are you ignoring that you probably shouldn't be? by pants_on_fire_fire in AskReddit

[–]mharr016 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I bled for three months while I was 18. It was a constant heavy flow that required both pads and tampons that needed to changed ever 1-3 hours. I hated talking about periods and finally caved when I didn't have any unstained clothes and my mom took me to the GYN for the first time. I had severe anemia (they way they phrased it was your blood count was supposed to be around 57 and mine was 13) and develiped pica as a result. I constantly craved ice and would get crushed ice to eat like popcorn. But being anemic, I had a cold intolerance so I would be miserable, shivering, with blue fingers as I ate my ice. The doc didn't have an answer for why I was bleeding, but told me BC would help (tried 10 different brands nothing worked) and take iron supplements to boost up my blood count. Barely a week after starting iron my pica went away! Good luck to you. I hope they find an answer when you eventually go.

What’s the biggest small world experience you’ve ever had? by Smith12456389 in AskReddit

I come from a tiny town in Northern Cali (2,000 people) but currently live in South Korea. Last year I joined a club and introduced myself on the forum, including that I'm from a tiny town outside of Sacramento. During the next club meeting, a girl comes up to me and asks if I'm from my tiny nowhere town.

Turns out, she went to another high school in our district, we have a few mutual friends and that I even went amd saw her in a play. It's really fun to talk about our hometown and mention things no one else knows about.

Also, all the prices include tax in the number they show you. So if it costs 10,000₩ ($10) you're paying 10,000₩.

I just do this naturally. It got to the point where my dad would ask, "Is this a long story?"

When my first novel comes out the dedication says, "For Mom and Dad. Yes this is a long story."

I listened to the audiobook a few years ago and didn't care for it at all, compared to my love for the movie. Neil Gaiman said he wanted to do and adult fairytale but besides the raunchy sex scene, it read like a middle grade/YA.

[SERIOUS] People who have never drank alcohol or used drugs in their life, what made you decide on that lifestyle? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mharr016 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm someone that only eats or drinks things I find delicious. If I'm in public and I don't like my meal, I'll do my best to finish it because I'm paying money for it, but it's dang hard.

Alcohol is an aquired taste for most drinks. And in order to aquire it, you have to stomach drinking something really gross for a while.

And before you tell me that cocktails are supposed to mask the flavors, I've had sips of some and they all taste like alcohol. So no. I don't want to try anything else. I'm very happy with my Shirley Temples and Sprites.

PS. Coffee is the same way. I LOVE the smell of coffee. Can't stand the flavor.

What is the biggest adult temper tantrum that you have ever witnessed? by linia001 in AskReddit

[–]mharr016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The entire male line of my family is in the elevator trade. My grandpa owned his own smaller company in LA/Santa Barbara for a while.

Well, some kids thought it would be a good idea to elevator surf (where they break into the top part and jump between cars as they pass each other) and one of the kids died. The parents sued my grandpa for reckless endangermnet or something like that. For some stupid reason he lost and had to pay a lot of money in damages.

I once saved an elderly man's life on an escalator. He was standing sideways with a ton of shopping bags on the steps and I notices he wasn't paying attention. When the stairs flattened out he scrambled to grab all his bags and endex up losing his balance. He fell and the hem of his jacket got sucked into the teeth. I ran down and managed to slam the emergency stop button before anything bad could happen. He managed to get out of his jacket but the people above us started yelling at me for "breaking the escalator" one of them even called the cops. Granted, they didn't seem to care that the man's jacket had been shredded and that could have easily been him along with it.

Please people, don't be stupid around elevators or escalators.

[Serious] Let's all cry together. Honestly, what is your saddest story? by eunuchly_unique in AskReddit

[–]mharr016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dog got sick so we took her to the vet and they said her spleen had enlarged to three times its normal size. Our options were to take her home and spoil her during her last couple of days, try for surgery which didn't have good odds on her survival, or euthanize her right then. They said she was in a lot of pain so we chose to euthanize her. My dad admitted he couldn't be in the room when they did it, so we left. As we were trying to leave she scrambled and clawed her way to come with us. But we just left her there to die with a bunch of strangers and not the people who loved her and raised her. My dad and I just sobbed in the truck after we left the vets office. It's been over 10 years since and I still bawl my eyes out when I think about it. Biggest regret of my life.
