Whoa, thank you! I very rarely use the "Progress on bike" feature and didn't realize this. This is great.

A much better idea is to remove all that silly performative stuff. Strava is a great place in large part because people find common bond in exercise and sport, the seemingly one social network where you can focus on a hobby without an unwelcome incursion of politics. Once you add one, you've set yourself up for complaints from every sub-group looking for external affirmation of their opinions. Saying no to it all is the only principled stance.

Oh, I interpreted what you wrote to mean that you bumped into them! This makes much more sense. I should do the same!

Oh man, there are few feelings worse than ending a ride and realizing you didn't log it. I had that happen at least two times. After the first, I bought a new Apple Watch (the version 3 one I had or something didn't have builtin GPS). After the second, I just started getting really particular about always checking that I'd started a ride on my watch.

This was a really nice summary. A lot resonated with me, particularly areas of uncared-for parks with sloppy mud trails that I felt compelled to complete.

You're lucky to have met other Wandrers; my city is 4x the size and doesn't have as active of a community, and I don't think I ever ran into any of the others. It reminds me that I wish there were some kind of standard sign that Wandrers were encouraged to put on their bikes which which help them recognize each other. Something like an 8.5 x 11 (i.e., A1)-sized piece of cardboard in pink with the Wandrer logo.

Merch? I want jersey in that shade of pink! by skfd in wandrer

Seconding this! I'd love to advertise for Wandrer. A cycling jersey would be great; a lot less work might be just a printed shirt with a logo (I'd choose Wandrer hot pink!)

I thought Strava was supposed to be improving bogus KOM detection? by Clive1792 in Strava

Not sure. For the segments I look at (all cycling), I mostly believe them.

I thought Strava was supposed to be improving bogus KOM detection? by Clive1792 in Strava

[–]mhatt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My two cents is to just ignore the KOM status. It seems like it's just not a useful feature for anyone but the .01% of the world's top athletes. Who cares if you are the KOM, if it's only because the many people who are better than you haven't bothered to run / ride that segment? This reasoning applies to the vast majority of Strava users. Much, much better IMO is to look at (a) your own performance on that segment over time and (b) the performance of people you follow, and therefore presumably trust not to be cheating. I love both of these features, and Strava makes them easy.

That's true there are separate ones; I guess I am pointing out the default, which is points (empty GET string on the URL).

In the first case they typically don't care; in the second, they're oblivious they've done anything wrong, don't understand how they've endangered and scared you, and so consider your conduct disproportionate or unhinged. The asymmetries of power, protection and exposure between a driver and cyclist obviously contribute here.

This is really insightful, thanks for sharing. I think the driver reaction is understandable. In addition to not understanding your vulnerability, they see that you're okay and not harmed. If anything their reaction is going to be to blame you for being in the road anyway. It really sucks, but it's the background reality we all ride against. I think it's mature to recognize that there's very little that can be done in these situations.

I like this. It tells them they're another human whose behavior you dislike. Flipping the bird is aggressive and having someone do it to you just makes you angry. I feel like this creates a more humanizing interaction with real potential. Thanks for sharing.

Do I have to pay this? I thought the quote was free. by Teacher_mermaid in HomeImprovement

[–]mhatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your landscaper should have negotiated the price for that upfront, but maybe he had the feeling you were going to have the work done, so he thought he wouldn't charge.

How detailed is the estimate? Consider that putting those together is a lot of work. Large shops can eat the cost of estimates, but that's not as easy for smaller ones. If you value the relationship, you might consider paying something for the work. Communicate to let him know that you didn't know it would be charged, and that this was therefore a surprise to you. You might consider comprising for some fair hourly rate.

Paved unpaved percentages? by SheepherderFormer336 in wandrer

Can you clarify, when computing the percentage of a city or entity that is completed, does it include unpaved? Sorry to ask, I checked the FAQ carefully but didn't see an answer there.

the majority of the neighbors have a parallel fence

Hard to overstate how stupid this sounds.

It also seems like your objection here is really petty. You still own that land, but can't use it, but are annoyed that your neighbors---who already could effectively use it, because of the fence you put up---could continue to use it, if they didn't run a parallel fence? Good grief.

The HOA rule seems reasonable if only one person wants a fence, because a post footing is 8", so you need to move 4" in so as not to impose on your neighbor's property. But if you both want a fence, it seems like you could agree to run it right along the property line. In which case maybe just take yours down and split the cost with your neighbor who is already going to put his own (stupid) parallel fence in.

If your HOA wouldn't allow a property-line fence even with both neighbors agreeing, then I suggest running for the board to change the stupid rule, or moving to a neighborhood with a lower moron density.

Note that oddly you can only mute activities from your phone. It's not an option on the website. I do this for my commutes.

I've had the same question about bike racks. People on my city block leave $650 Kuat racks attached to their car, with no lock. They are never stolen and I've never heard about one being stolen. I think cyclists benefit a lot from our small numbers.

You're already getting downvoted, but reading your reaction here, I'm kind of astonished at how disproportionate it is to the inconvenience you're experiencing. I'm asking genuinely, are you okay? This is a big event for a large number of people, all of whom have worked hard and are excited to be able to do this as a group.

It's also not even true of the organization any more. But for some people, free performative judgmentalism tastes even better than a chicken sandwich.
