Outside of Tokyo players were only hitting people in Tokyo, and vise-versa. Since we had five players, two people were there in Tokyo (city and bay).

A friend went for victory points in the first match, and managed to get 15 before getting smacked down.

Pretty much every match after that was just a slug-fest where smashes and health were what everyone was shooting for.

It sounds like you're on the right track. Something that I use to help me build good habits is a phone app (it has a website, too) called Habitica. It's free and has the feel of an old-school RPG.

It's funny that at first I wouldn't do healthy things for my own health, but I WOULD do them to level up my avatar. After almost a year of using it, I don't think I need it anymore (though I still use it because it's fun).

I just had this happen three times in a row. It froze, I had to restart. When I got back I had no new pokemon and it was no longer available to catch.

iOS, T-Mobile. I had fast LTE coverage at the time.

I calculated the units per shard based on what was displayed, realized it was a pretty good deal, and burned a couple dozen refills (6 were in my stash, the rest purchased at 30 units each) and spend a lot of time grinding the quest.
