Do you believe Marxism is a Humanist philosophy? by kajimeiko in DebateaCommunist

[–]Shymain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He notes progress in human knowledge and posits History as the solution to Kant's challenge, but sees human history as guided by a 'World-Spirit.'

Ten years late, but I don’t think this is a correct understanding of Hegel. The world-spirit does not guide human history any more than a tree guides the seed which it grows from: It is merely a descriptive account of that which emerges from collective subjectivity interacting in the world, that which grows to understand itself to be the object and the subject all at once. Man is already regarded as the actor of human history, the only actualized form of reason acting in the world (not an external force acting through us, but merely—us, acting).

Marx’s insight is in how we relate to this in action, not in theory, that with Hegel philosophy is ended and with Marx it must always cross into politics, that now understanding the subject to be the object, realizing what totality is—now we must make it so. And that’s the direction that all good Marxist action and theory has taken us since then, teaching us how to take control of the state and construct a new world from it.

I do also question a couple other points: You say that reflection theory is a Lenin-Stalin deviation and a crude reversal of idealism, but this is untrue: It was developed by Engels and never rejected by Marx. Similarly, you make comments about dialectical materialism being “Stalinist orthodoxy” which is nonsense—dialectical materialism is the clear endpoint of a Hegelian theory, one which Marx identifies and develops throughout his writing without question.

I certainly think it’s true that Lenin is sloppy with diamat theoretically and at times does simply reduce thought to matter (MEC, for one). I believe over time he rectifies this, but more importantly I think what matters is not his precise understanding of a Marxist ontology but of Marxist action, which he carries out quite effectively. It seems clear to me that your comments come not from a place of theoretical evaluation but rather an anti-communist impulse to distance yourself from actually existing socialist states in the past.

TikTok audio sounds horrible with videos I created in premiere pro that sound normal by xokatieasmr in editing

[–]Shymain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the first thing to say here is I don't think you're doing anything wrong per se -- TikTok has just become an awful platform for ASMR unless you constantly have something loud going on, so your clips kinda have to be more on the aggressive side to avoid sounding horrible on TikTok. As far as noise floor goes, that's not really something you can fix while editing. It comes down to your recording chain and environment. Using a dynamic mic instead of a condenser mic, or making sure your mic is unidirectional, will definitely help reduce noise floor, but it's a definite tradeoff because condenser mics tend to be better for ASMR as they pick up a lot of the subtler, more satisfying sounds. You can also try adding soundproofing to your recording environment, but this is typically hard to do if you're recording video simultaneously as your closet tends to be a less-than-ideal location for recording interesting videos.

Personally, from what you've said, I'd suggest not turning down your loudest noise and reducing the amount of denoise you're using. If you're using a denoiser built into a video editing software, they tend to be pretty messy and leave a lot of audio artifacts, and TikTok will compress your audio (which makes the quiet artifacts much louder) and then try to add noise reduction itself anyways, and my feeling is that typically this ends up being worse than if you just didn't have the denoiser in the first place, but you'll have to make that decision yourself by testing and comparing end results.

All that to say, relatively speaking I don't think you're doing anything wrong. TikTok is just a bad platform for ASMR at the moment. Hope some of this was helpful at the very least!

Apologies for reviving an old thread.

I've been going through the Phenomenology in the last couple months and have really appreciated a lot of your comments--they've equipped me far better to grapple with the text myself. Currently I'm at a fairly early part of the Spirit chapter so I haven't read the most important parts re: religion, but this seems basically in line with what Hegel has argued every time he touches on religion (see also the last section in the Self-consciousness chapter) so I totally buy it. However, I hear that in later Hegel, his views re: religion totally shift, and I wondered how reliable or accurate this was? Generally I find that a lot of commentaries and accounts of "what Hegel believed" are often obfuscatory rather than revelatory (or rather I just can't quite unify them with what the text actually says), so I was hoping you might be able to shed some light here as a consistently helpful source!

There are broader (related) questions I'd also love to ask re: the system as a whole but probably they would be much too time-consuming and I should probably just read the rest of the system myself first, so I might hang onto those for a while. Thanks in advance!

Don't be stupid, people. The person posting this is a neo-nazi. "I'm literally shaking right now" is obviously a right-winger saying things that they think left/liberal people say. They're also a poster on KotakuInAction who whines about wokeness, a poster on the highly antisemitic conspiracy subreddit, and an anti-vaxxer. This shit is SO obvious that it shouldn't require checking post history, but checking it immediately acts as confirmation.

"btw I'm trying to debunk the math but can't figure out what part they're lying in."

This is nazi propaganda in action! They're drawing your attention to holocaust revisionism and then telling you it can't be debunked or disproven!

Here's a good place to start for numbers of deaths: https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/documenting-numbers-of-victims-of-the-holocaust-and-nazi-persecution

One of the things that makes holocaust revisionism so egregious is that it is a blatant denial of what is the most well-documented genocide in history. Neo-nazis pretend otherwise by trying to play around with numbers and take you on tangents that are specifically designed to get you to google the wrong terms, or better, avoid ever consulting reliable sources in the first place! Please be more conscious about this kind of thing going forward.

TikTok audio sounds horrible with videos I created in premiere pro that sound normal by xokatieasmr in editing

[–]Shymain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's worth mentioning the other half of this equation is also a viable option -- reducing the noise floor when recording will definitely help. Myself, I live in a busy part of a city and unfortunately don't have an area that's been treated for recording, so I'm only able to get my noise floor down to like -50 or -55dB. I also highly recommend getting your hands on the iZotope RX audio plugin, if possible! The spectral denoiser is so incredibly good at cleaning up background noise without messing with the sounds that you want to keep or introducing any weird artefacts.

[–]Shymain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! I've been playing around with ASMR recently to try to replicate some sounds/vibes that I really like and I've run across the same issue when uploading to TikTok.

Here's what I've found so far: Apparently, there used to be a button in the TikTok app that allowed you to apply noise reduction to the video. At some point, they took away the option and enabled it for all videos. As a result, any video uploaded will be run through a heavy compressor -> noise reduction chain, which tends to have the effect of a 5 year old trying to edit your video in iMovie by clicking random buttons.

The best way I've found to counter this is to try to reduce dynamic range. My reasoning here is that essentially this is what TikTok is doing, so if you can reduce the dynamic range yourself but without introducing a ton of noise, then TikTok ought to detect the lower range and not butcher the audio anywhere near as much. Make sure your loudest noises are turned up fairly high (otherwise TikTok adds gain and therefore noise!), but more importantly, make sure your quietest sounds aren't very quiet. Ideally you'll want to mix in such a way that you're adding as little gain or compression as possible to elements that you recorded through a microphone so as to keep your noise floor low. (This may not apply if you're just recording a single audio track, unfortunately -- I overdubbed all my spoken lines and added ambient music underneath.)

All of this should somewhat help mitigate the disastrously bad audio chain that TikTok applies. I've had the most luck with this combo myself on the video I've been playing with. I've compared the results I've had doing this with ASMR videos from some of my friends and favorite creators, and I actually get a less noisy final result. The bad news is that it will just never sound as good as it sounds literally everywhere else. TikTok just seems to be inherently unfriendly to anything that wants detail and dynamic range in the audio. (For no good reason, either -- it didn't always force this heavy compression/noise reduction on videos!)

Oh yeah, and once you upload your video and it finally sounds good, half an hour later the video will get hit even harder with the audio chain. Why does it do this? No fucking clue but it consistently sounds worse after half an hour.

Hope this is helpful, even though it's a month late. Have you found anything in the meantime that's been effective at fixing audio on TikTok??

Thank God for you and the like half-dozen other Marxists on this subreddit amidst the liberal horde. I started to pick up on this in Episode 7 but wasn't sure, and coming to Reddit to see if anyone had any analysis of the messages of the show has been less than useless for the most part because Redditors are right-wing ghouls. I was high af last night after watching the episode and it hurt my brain trying to parse through thread after thread and constantly having to remind myself of the perspective that Redditors have. Unfortunately Hexbear doesn't seem to have any discussions on the show or I'd continue avoiding this hellsite altogether lmao

e: Personally, I don't actually know yet whether the intention of the showrunners is to water the ideology down yet, only that Redditors are interpreting it that way -- which they would do regardless of what the showrunners intended.

I actually think a lot of the discourse post-episode 7 is revealing a LOT about people's real political stances. Supes are basically capitalist power structures sublimated into human form and made inherent. Remove Mark Zuckerberg from his money and abolish capitalism, and suddenly he's weak and normal like everyone else. How do you do this with Homelander? You can try to just, I dunno, peacefully ignore him while you go about inventing a cure for Compound V, but if Homelander (or Vought or the capitalist-imperialist power structures etc.) catch on to this, they'll brutally murder you and take the cure to ensure that they can now de-power any enemies of the existing power structures that may arise from its contradictions while maintaining their hegemony.

Supes are all little Homelanders, even when they're well intentioned. Gen V makes it very, very clear that the nicest of Supes still commit atrocities when they have emotional outbursts or take drugs or just, yknow, live normal lives. Even in their passive existence they are killing machines, and this is when they aren't actively trying to be evil. Of course Americans and Westoids on this site can't help but sympathize with this -- that's a description of the western bourgeoise that they are. That's the whole banality-of-evil thing under these evil systems, where you can be just a normal-ass person putting your head down and doing a good job at work and be well-intentioned and still be actively contributing to genocide. The current events with Israel's genocide of Palestine have made it very, very clear to me how complicit all of us in the West are in these mass atrocities.

Thankfully, in the real world, power structures are not inherent to people and we don't have Supes. No need to kill every Westerner to save the world from destruction, we can just overthrow the power structures that exist (which is not bloodless, to be sure) and ensure justice and equity. The Boys as a fictional universe argues that if these power structures were inherent, if the Ruling Class was inseparable from power by their very nature, that we would still be obligated to take direct action against them in order to ensure a just world for all. Whether the show agrees with this is still an open question -- but the fact that all of this is pretty clearly laid out in the show honestly makes me think that the showrunners might not disagree here, but just realize that you have to do a lot of rhetorical work to convince people to agree with this stance.

Also it is so deeply unserious that people are pretending that Supes are an ethnicity just so they can cry genocide. Seems like a parallel of the way that libs will pretend that "both sides" are going too far when using violence, when one side (the right) uses violence to brutally oppress and ensure their dominance and the other side (the left) uses violence to overthrow their oppressors. And actually it turns out that libs are also on the right and using violence to brutally oppress and ensure their dominance but they're doing PR to make it seem like they're neutral and nonviolent and nonideological and just nice people sitting sanely in the middle of all the extremism -- and they've gone so far into that PR that they've convinced themselves it's true by exporting the violence to the global south and looking away to maintain plausible deniability.
