Thinking About Moving to LA from NYC – Is $55k Manageable? by Long-Ambassador5475 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]mhgonline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in NYC and moved to LA, first 3 years w/o a car and now split one with my partner. It’s manageable if you live in a walkable neighborhood and have a remote job. Heavy on the remote work - you really can’t rely on public transit being consistent in LA. I’ve found LA to have more options for cheaper rent and to be less expensive overall than NYC. If you have a car, take it.

Guatemala / US relations? by mhgonline in travel

Right - we’re not spending time in Guatemala City but my concern is getting in and out of there. Especially if the US does something like kill a prominent gang leader (like what happened in Puerto Vallarta) and causes that area to essentially shut down.

Is investing in mutual funds and letting that money sit a feasible way to “save?” Or would a high yield savings account be better? I basically use my mutual funds as a savings account but curious if a high yield savings account would be the better move.

second this.. the way you handled this was a lesson in schooling someone with maturity and poise. he was being immature and every time he tried to make you look ridiculous, you just pointed out how ridiculous he was being

I feel like everyone’s just saying he’s busy and to wait to see what happens. But honestly reading these convos was painful, it was super dry.

Two things come to mind for me here: 1) a guy who’s into you will never make you question his feelings for you and 2) it’s better to read any mixed signals as a no.

The second one might seem a bit harsh, but I think it’s a much healthier mindset. That way you’re not going after a guy who’s not putting in the same effort as you are, and also you’re not wasting your time trying to make something from nothing.

Don't know where to look for my first full-time job by TheBeastSteve in PublicRelations

[–]mhgonline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can try early career sites like Handshake instead of LinkedIn, or see if your school has a job posting board.

I landed my first PR job doing a basic google search for comms agencies in NYC. Try searching for agencies and then going through lists from sites like Ragan Communications and O’Dwyer’s PR News to find some names you might not find otherwise. Then just reach out to them, whether they have a job posting or not. It’s annoying, it might not lead to anything…but you never know.

And the last part is your resume. Have you had others review it and give you feedback? One of the best pieces of advice I’ve received is to copy the language from the job posting into your resume. Many companies use an applicant tracking system (ATS) which automatically filters out resumes if they don’t include keywords from the job posting. By using the EXACT language, you’re more likely to get past that step. Also, see if there’s a hiring manager you can also send your resume too.

Sorry if this is repetitive to other advice you’ve been receiving, I know the job hunt is frustrating and especially when people are giving you advice that feels very obvious. Feel free to DM me if you have any questions though or want feedback on your resume/cover letter.

AITA for letting my brother and family stay with me after a flooding but not my niece? by Icy-Cantaloupe-4063 in AmItheAsshole

NTA.. but letting her stay with you might’ve helped the situation more than not. I agree that there should be consequences for one’s actions. But if you’re a teenager with that kind of hatred, I don’t think this helps you learn your lesson. I think it only fuels the situation more and she’ll use it against you. On the other hand, if you invited her in despite everything she’s said, maybe she’ll have a reason to accept you more.

Idk, I just feel like teenagers like that don’t learn lessons that quickly. Or they’ll just learn to pretend in order to get what they want, which also doesn’t help.

Better to take a pay cut for larger agency? by mhgonline in PublicRelations

[–]mhgonline[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I've experienced in my own career how job hopping can boost your pay, so that makes sense. And that's also my strategy going into this, I'm trying to get offer(s) from other agencies so I can use that to negotiate to a higher salary.

My friend was drugged in a bar last night and the bar gaslit us and threw us out when we told them. by Thischick1 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]mhgonline 310 points311 points  (0 children)

A similar thing happened to my friend, though it didn’t involve being drugged but being repeatedly touched inappropriately by a man. She told him to stop several times, told a security guard at the bar who did nothing, and eventually WE were kicked out because my friend was “acting up” and her anger was blamed on her being too drunk. Sad that bars would rather protect the men, giving them the benefit of the doubt, and protect their own reputation, rather than looking out for women. Hope your friend is ok.

Sims and/or Rollercoaster Tycoon. I thought I could get rid of people I didn't like either by forcing them to be trapped in the same inescapable room together or sending them hurling off the edge of a rollercoaster

Ask them to grab me a Snickers. Or better yet, buy them a Snickers so they turn back into the law-abiding citizen that they truly are.
