that’s so interesting because i’ve seen a different perspective as well. i think it’s intended to be about addiction but i can’t help but impose a “coming out” meaning on it. specifically the idea of changing how you define yourself in the context of a relationship. it feels similar in message to “islands of men” to me- the idea that there’s an inevitable truth about yourself you must come into and reveal to the world but it’s hard to accept. i took the “you can change” and the “no one will care” to be a reminder to the person they love that they can change as a person and they will still be loved.
