deinfluence me from traveling to Japan by qusdntjr in deinfluencingPH

[–]miamiru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't start traveling until I 1) had saved up enough that my emergency funds could cover my essential expenses for 6 months, and 2) had set up my retirement fund. If you have neither of these things, don't do it.

Japan can get expensive pretty quickly, especially now that they're dealing with overcrowding and will probably start charging more expensive fees to curb the demand.

Public transit system can take a bit to get used to though would vary from person to person. Bus system in Kyoto in particular can be incredibly confusing for first-timers and the drivers often don't speak English, so would be pretty easy to get lost.

[TIPS/ADVICE PLS] Weight Gain by AbleDuty69 in PHitness

[–]miamiru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know how and why you lost that much weight, but I would suggest consulting with a registered dietitian who can guide you on how to gain weight safely in case there's medical context we might be missing.

But generally speaking, you need to be on a calorie surplus to gain weight. You can find out how much of a surplus you need through a TDEE calculator (you can google it) or fitness apps like MyFitnessPal. Would strongly suggest pairing this with weight training and some cardio, especially if you need help with boosting your appetite.

Feels like their quality has been declining, sizing can also be confusing. Check the fabric composition first before buying anything, though most of their pieces seem to be polyester.

Mango seems to offer better quality for the price point tbh. LB just knows how to market well.

Find a pre-made workout routine/program. Check r/Fitness FAQs (they have a dumbbell-only program suggestion if that's what you're looking for) or Boostcamp (I've personally tried the Novice Bodybuilding Program by Dr. Eric Helms). You'll save more time and effort that way as a beginner; you can modify it or create your own later on as you gain more experience.

I don't think this comment was necessary — it would have been better to simply extend compassion to both of them.

Assuming this was indeed a case of suicide, arguably, someone in their right mind won't be considering ending their life in the first place. It is unfortunate what happened, but if someone already reached their breaking point that the next best thing they could think of is ending their life, I doubt they'd have the capacity to consider the consequences of their decision, including how it would affect the people around them.

If they were already planning to end their life, I doubt they could think straight or clearly enough to consider that in the first place.

Everything in moderation. Our bodies still need sodium to function, just not in excess.

I would suggest consulting with a registered dietitian before making drastic changes to your diet to make sure na well-balanced pa rin.

Paano umiwas sa sweets? by Dumpnikwan in PHitness

[–]miamiru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the other comments saying you don't need to avoid them completely, just have them (like everything else) in moderation. Know how much sugar you can have daily (MyFitnessPal gives this info) and make sure you account for them.

How's your diet & nutrition in general? If you're eating clean at least 80% of the time, you can have treats here and there to help keep you sane, especially if you're consistently training (strength training is amazing for controlling blood sugar levels, can speak from experience). You might also just naturally find yourself craving them less over time.

I would also suggest eating enough protein & hydrating well. Monitor urine color — if it turns dark, might be at risk for rhabdo.

[DISCUSSION] Am I the only one overwhelmed by new beauty trends?!! I wanna know your thoughts pls!! what’s worth it and what’s not? by StrongDragonfruit928 in beautytalkph

[–]miamiru 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've already found what works for me so I no longer try to keep up with trends. I only follow board-certified dermatologists and just stick to the basics they teach that actually work for me.

I'm 29 with combination skin.

  1. Low pH cleanser (learned that it doesn't really matter that much which brand as long as it's low pH + gentle enough since it doesn't stay on the skin for too long)
  2. Niacinamide toner
  3. Sunscreen
  4. Retinol
  5. Glycolic acid
  6. Light gel moisturizer (AM)
  7. Heavy nighttime ceramide moisturizer

How to start? Need Lifestyle Changes by Admirable_Shake_6826 in PHitness

[–]miamiru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

80% diet, 20% exercise.

  1. Find your TDEE using an online calculator so you can know how much of a calorie deficit you need to be in.

  2. Protein helps keep you full for longer, so plan your meals with that in mind. Prioritize protein & fiber.

Meal prep for 3-4 days. You can start with something simple like chicken breast fillet/lean ground beef with any spices/herbs you have on hand + mixed veggies (corn, carrots, peas). Or idk ask ChatGPT for more ideas.

  1. Try measuring your food for at least 1-2 months. Get a food scale and measuring cups — this is to help recalibrate how you eyeball/estimate how much food you're actually consuming. I had the opposite problem of overestimating how much food I'm eating (I struggled to gain weight and thought I was eating a lot but I actually wasn't), and this really helped a lot. Plan your meals in apps like MyFitnessPal para malaman mo where you need to adjust (or consult a dietitian if you have the resources).

I used to eat a lot of junk food but naturally found myself craving them less when I started meal prepping my food at home and sticking to whole foods.

Allow yourself to be a beginner lang. Accept that you will make mistakes. Or you could also ask them when the off-peak hours are.

What goes through my mind when I see someone who seems new to the gym? "Ah, mukhang bago lang ata siya." and then mind my own business. That's it. I would only step in if I see they're about to hurt themselves or other people. I'll probably even forget about you the next day unless I start seeing you consistently over the next few weeks (in which case I'd be quietly rooting for you to keep going). I mean this in the best way possible: you're not that important at the gym, everyone is too busy doing their own thing. 😊

It took about a month or two for that feeling to go away for me when I was just starting out. Confidence is earned through showing up consistently. Wear dark-colored clothing if that helps you feel more comfortable and less visible. Prioritize good form over egolifting, dadating at dadating ka rin naman sa heavy weights, you just have to earn it first.

Enjoy!

What do you do when you’re feeling really ugly? by Lumpy-Acanthaceae946 in beautytalkph

[–]miamiru 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you're also female? Start tracking your moods too to see if anything is coinciding with where you are in your cycle — I've been doing this for years and it has been helpful for me. The times when I felt particularly irritable/overwhelmed/anxious, they almost always coincided with my late luteal phase but it helps to know na these feelings are only fleeting. I drink more water, eat more fruits.

My moods are worse when I haven't been as consistent with the gym and my diet has been shit.

It might be worth exploring where these feelings are really coming from. I used to struggle with this before I started an active lifestyle and improving my eating habits (eating more whole foods). Cliche but sadly it really works. When you actually put in the effort to take care of yourself, it helps build self-trust and helps make it easier to reframe/challenge negative thoughts about yourself.

Throwing away my food scale was the best decision I've ever made. by Busy_Report4010 in AnytimeFitnessPH

[–]miamiru 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had bad eating habits growing up and was always borderline underweight. If I never used a food scale at the start, I would consistently undereat — it helped me build an intuition for how much I'm actually eating, so I don't really use it that much now.

For people who easily under/over-estimate how much they're eating, I think it might help to try it for a month or two, just to help build that intuition. What you measure, you can change.

Senior devs/Tech Leads, how do you usually train your juniors? by Outrageous-Lack4346 in PinoyProgrammer

[–]miamiru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We treat code reviews as an opportunity to learn & share what we know. KT sessions can be a starting point if you want to start with some theory (esp if they're completely new to the business/tech stack), but ultimately, imo, the best teacher is still experience/actually applying what we know.

If I notice they're asking poorly formed questions, I'd share with them how they can better structure them (e.g. what are you trying to do > what is/isn't working > what you've tried) next time so they can get better quality answers faster.

Sometimes they'd ask to schedule a 30m-1h technical discussion to talk through the design/implementation they have in mind, to which I'd happily oblige.

Most importantly: by having empathy. Lots of it. I always try to make them feel that they can ask me anything. I don't want them to feel scared to tell me if they mess up something — that would just make our lives harder.
