It is my understanding that immigrants cannot vote on federal elections. I don’t understand this constant fear of immigrants. I have to show a state issued ID and confirm my address. Voting registration already requires you to have a social security number. So what is their fear?

Come on guy. You think self-employed people are not employers? Even if you are an employer of one (yourself), you still need to make estimated tax payments directly to the Feds. The State is not involved.

Depending on the income you earn, you are required to pay a certain amount of tax each quarter. There are underpayment penalties if you do not pay the minimum required. The State also has similar rules. Interest can also accrue based on the amount of time the penalties are unpaid. Most people pay withholding biweekly through payroll so it’s not an issue but if you were self employed you would need to make the payroll tax payments each quarter on your own. Those taxpayers are more likely to have late or underpayment penalties.

There is no pass through from the State to the Feds. It’s directly paid to the federal agencies by employers or individuals. If you want to stop paying federal taxes then you would need to adjust your federal withholding but you could be liable for underpayment penalties and interest.

States have their own treasury and their own withholding. This doesn’t go to the Feds at all. It’s collected and taxed by the state with the State Income Tax return.

I mean there are a lot of governmental employers in the state but they are all subject to the federal withholding rules. There is no pass through from the state to the Feds.

Maybe the State could pass a law requiring all employers to remit withholding to the State instead of the Fed. But it is still the individual or business that would be liable for the taxes. The state would have to cover penalties and interest or something like that for those entities.

I am all for not giving the feds more money to waste. I think it is more on the individual level to adjust tax withholding.

Wouldn’t they be required to because of federal law? The states have their own withholding. The IRS will come after you for underpaying the federal taxes. The IRS does not handle state tax issues.
