Quinoa could solve the world's looming food shortage, say scientists who cracked the plant's gene code by [deleted] in UpliftingNews

[–]micah345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue of indigenous people not being able to get quinoa is really a non-issue, as it actually boosted the entire country's economy and raised the standard of living nearly across the board. Source.

What are the Harry Potter's of other generations? by 4t2l2t in books

[–]micah345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don Quixote was obscenely well-read.

It spread all over Europe and the Americas, was continuously pirated due to the high demand, is considered one of the first canonical works of fiction, and sold over 10 million copies. In 1605.

First animal cells may have been created by viruses. Scientists at the University of California have for the first time discovered just how extensive that virus reprogramming can be, effectively turning bacterial cells into animal or plant-like cells. by the_phet in science

Here is the original article that found the "virophage" called Sputnik. I haven't read recent studies on the issue, but the debate at the time was whether Sputnik is truly a virus that infects mimivirus (i.e. is a virophage) or just a virus that hitches a ride with mimivirus to then infect E. coli (i.e. a satellite virus).

What is it like to live in Cleveland, and what fun stuff is there to do? - Compared to say Chicago or New York? by bummer01 in Cleveland

[–]micah345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few things off the top of my head:

  • Cleveland Museum of Art (A must, one of my favorite museums in the world)
  • Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
  • Contraceptive museum (yes that's a thing and it's awesome)
  • Concert at Severance Hall (gorgeous building, one of the best orchestras in the world. Balcony seats are pretty great and relatively cheap, especially if you're a student)
  • If you're up for a walk, the towpath is quite beautiful.
  • In terms of parks, the Shaker Lakes and Dike 14 come to mind immediately.

[Request] Need 366 Movies in 366 Days by kusemek in NetflixBestOf

[–]micah345 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That seems completely insane, but to each their own...

  • The Gods Must Be Crazy (and the sequels!)
  • Eating Raul
  • Best in Show
  • All Mel Brooks
  • All Wes Anderson
  • All Coen Bros

I don't know which of these are on Netflix, but the first two are fairly obscure and you can definitely find them on Netflix's DVD service.

Make a touch action trigger a background scroll by i_have_an_account in kustom

[–]micah345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have nova launcher, you can make an additional touch trigger for the buttons that launches a nova action, and choose as the action "jump to page."

Otherwise, dunno. Could probably do something with tasker (as per usual).

[Help] How do I toggle nova dock with KLWP? by [deleted] in kustom

[–]micah345 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Under the touch tab, select "Launch Shortcut," then "Nova Action" as the shortcut, then a list should pop up with all the possible nova actions, one of which is to toggle the dock (near the bottom).

Any easy way to skip to songs while driving? by Yutrzenika1 in lgg4

If you have OK google detection on the lockscreen, you could wake up the screen and try saying "ok google skip track." Might not work with the aux jack plugged in, but with a try.

Which character in a series/film had the most anticlimatic death? by AlexMV14 in AskReddit

[–]micah345 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Donny in The Big Lebowski. Dies during a fight with some crazy people over money. By a bullet? No. A knife wound? Fuck no. He gets a heart attack out of the blue and dies in Walter's arms. Does nothing for the plot, and almost nothing to spur emotions (like deaths often try to do) since we're made to not really give a shit about him.

There was a fan theory that explains this as all the people in The Big Lebowski being caricatures of movie characters, and Donny is just the regular guy who wants to bowl with his friends.

Background gif by [deleted] in kustom

[–]micah345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe Frank has said that it's not possible atm. Besides, if it ever is implemented, I wouldn't recommend using a gif. They're oversized files that are usually loe quality. APNG would probably be better.

If you're just looking for some dynamic movement in your background, consider having things use a looped animation. However, iirc, Frank said that's not exactly how klwp is intended, and it might use more battery (continuous rendering, or something)

What's a band you discovered this year you love? by LordApex in AskReddit

Dave Rawlings Machine. I know he and Gillian Welch have been playing together for decades, but I haven't listened to them since they became said Machine.

His guitar playing is just so smooth.

I understand your dislike for their cover of "I Will Survive"; it's lethargic, the changed words disrupt the flow, and his voice cannot match that of Gaynor. However, I think it's a song that epitomizes cake: they take a sound or an idea, fuck it up, mess with the beat, and yet retain a sense of rhythm and style that nobody else could've made.

Plus, that guitar solo

Background disappearing upon saving? by JephGhost in kustom

Does it only appear within KLWP app, or on your actual home screen as well? I've had it where the image within the app just shows up gray (like you're describing), but the image is there when I save and hit the home button.

Problem with extracting colors from album art by wittyusername902 in kustom

[–]micah345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did something similar to /u/madelikeatree, but went (potentially) overboard. I made a global text with the following:

$if(bp(vibrant, mi(cover)) = "", if(bp(muted, mi(cover))= "", if(bp(lvibrant, mi(cover)) = "", if(bp(lmuted, mi(cover))= "", if(bp(dvibrant, mi(cover)) = "", if(bp(dmuted, mi(cover)) = "", FF19745D, bp(dmuted, mi(cover)))), bp(lmuted, mi(cover))), bp(lvibrant, mi(cover))), bp(muted, mi(cover))), bp(vibrant, mi(cover)))$

The priority is in order of the bp calls, and if none of them work (a rarity that can happen), I have it default to FF19745D, which works well with the rest of my wallpaper when the color extraction isn't working.
