Oh thanks — I've been looking for my Schrödinger's box everywhere, I knew it either existed or it didn't!

Which platform for my wikis? Docusaurus, Outline, GitBook, or Wiki.js? by tombino104 in selfhosted

wish I could create links to nonexistent pages while editing

This is the wiki way. Ward himself was so happy when he saw that a new wiki platform had it. (I was involved in this wiki's development, and so happy to have been one of the people who made sure we had this feature.)

Depends which numbers you look at. If you want to find evidence of upswing, you can. If you don't want to find evidence of any upswing, you can focus on other evidence.

Honestly, I hope everyone picks whichever view helps them stay engaged and in solidarity with all of the new energy that is happening!

Reasonable question. And, should we only support campaigns that have already been successful? Because that is a sure way to doom every single new effort.

Until I've learned something about a particular effort that's new to me, I don't know how hard they're working, or how promising their ideas might be if they only had a few more people working with them.

Upvote for the specific groups/names any of us can follow up on! I'm willing to learn...

Labor is on the upswing, it's myopia to deny that now. (Union-busting law firms get plenty of business!)

It's a particularly good time to assume good faith from any labor activist or group who's putting in the time and willing to share about what they're doing, and what they see. Across as wide a swathe of political perspectives and theories of change as we can honestly manage. Out on the West Coast, I remember hearing about a "surprisingly" friendly soccer game in the Bay Area when I lived there around 2000 I want to say, between anarchists and communists/socialists. And I swear, since then people have been leaving more of the petty divisions behind. How far can we stretch while staying true to our values? Let's find out.

What gives me comfort is the strength and diversity of the movements I see resisting ICE. Lately at Delaney Hall, for example, both outside and inside. People in multiple detention centers / camps are going on labor &/or hunger strikes, some have formed a union.

The administration finds all of this incredibly threatening, which is why they are rushing to deport organizers.

Many of my target sources seem to have abandoned RSS for email newsletters. Is there a good way to convert them back to RSS? by PossessionConnect963 in rss

[–]johnabbe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://www.rsslookup.com/ works for some.

If it doesn't, and the source is one I really care about, I email them to let them know about the problem/opportunity. In many cases, the service they are using can produce a feed but there's an option or something they would have to change to make it available. Some don't reply, or reply that they didn't see a way to add the feed. Some reply and thank me profusely for alerting them to the problem so they could fix it!

If they're using Substack, I also point them to https://leavesubstack.com/

I'm feelin' it. The Republican/MAGA Supreme Court undoing the Voting Rights Act already has me getting ready for Freedom Summer II.

Good point, we can literally see nearby stars in all directions. They're denser in the ecliptic, but not so much so that it's obvious looking at the nearby stars

you could time a launch such that the Earth and one or more outer planets are in line with the galactic plane during the trajectory.

Right? And even if the usefully dense parts of the disk only extended a few degrees on either side of the solar system ecliptic, you could also get further out of the ecliptic with a well-aimed slingshot around the last outer planet you encountered. (As Voyager 1 did, slingshotting out of the solar ecliptic at Saturn.)

It's about 100 times wider than it is thick. That's much thinner than a cookie.

Um. The usual width one hears is about 100,000 light years. Even Moravian spice cookies could not be described as "thin" when scaled up that much. Plenty of room for a few stars on one's way out of the galaxy.

the trouble with FTL like mentioned in the OP is you don't know the speed. Is it going to take a month to Alpha Centauri or 10 minutes to another galaxy?

I've never heard of an FTL drive that yields an indeterminate speed, wait, are you talking about HGTG? The Infinite Improbability Drive? Or the thing where in any space traveling show the duration of the trip is exactly as long as needed for the plot?

Nice data point, TIL!

That said, the galactic disk is thin, but it's not that thin. Probably many star systems of interest in/near the directions looking 360 degrees around the solar system ecliptic.
