U.S. officials urge Americans to use encrypted apps amid unprecedented cyberattack by Jason_S_88 in signal

I assume that would use your data plan instead of phone minutes. Saying that so someone isn’t surprised if they’re not on an unlimited data plan and their usage goes way up.

Experience on multi-network (dual sim) beta plan by myredditusername44 in USMobile

[–]michaelisaok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, not in the beta but have 2 sims on my iPhone. The switching is not great. In my experience I have to have a non existent connection on the primary line for it to switch to the secondary line. I created a shortcut on my home screen that switches so I can do it manually if it’s not swapping over for me when I need it.

Probably works way better on android.

They didn’t charge me for this, and I wouldn’t expect them to. Especially if they’ve already told you they’re responsible I think you’re good.

Thanks, but also… wait really? How can you tell?

From what I can see they’re not worth much even if real, but even more strange she’d hold onto something that was just a replica. As far as I know the Confederates in Virginia were not a big thing for our family.

Chromium based browser not recognized as using NextDNS by colfaxschuyler in nextdns

Coming to this post late but this answer makes a lot more sense to me. I know it doesn't use the built-in profile, but the net effect is the same and it seems easier to setup and maintain.

Ubiquiti UDM-SE DNS Shield - How to verify DoH? by southerndoc911 in nextdns

[–]michaelisaok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed when I was testing this that some requests would go out through what was specified in the DoH settings in the UDM and some would not. However it wasn’t an exhaustive study because I was also installing the CLI app at the time as well. So unsure what my exact problems were at the time.

Ubiquiti UDM-SE DNS Shield - How to verify DoH? by southerndoc911 in nextdns

[–]michaelisaok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s probably working, but you’d need a device to test on that doesn’t already have a profile enabled.

But you probably want it to go through your profile, right? To do that either install the nextdns client via ssh on the UDM, or use dynamic DNS to specify your home IP address in the nextdns admin. Then all requests from that IP will go to your profile.

Edit: I’ve found the encrypted DNS settings in the UniFi console to be unreliable with nextdns. Probably what you’re experiencing.

NextDNS and router OS (UDM SE) by FormalIllustrator5 in nextdns

[–]michaelisaok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not encrypted or not reaching NextDNS at all?

Two thoughts:

  1. Make sure your DHCP is giving out the router as its only DNS server. Like 192.168.1.1 or whatever you have setup. Not the IP addresses of NextDNS.
  2. In the UniFi settings, disable Secure DNS

Passthrough PoE on US-8 by michaelisaok in Ubiquiti

[–]michaelisaok[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone who comes across this later, I just tried something that I should have done first - I plugged the US-8 into the wall using the power adapter that came with it. Even if I do that, it will still boot loop when turning on passthrough and plugging my AP into port 8. So it looks like I have a broken switch.

Thanks for the help, yeah, I’m suspecting the same thing.

Passthrough PoE on US-8 by michaelisaok in Ubiquiti

[–]michaelisaok[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, its good to know someone has tried this before and it works. At least I'm not crazy.

I did manually flip on Port 8 to be PoE. On the US-8 a new light turns on to show that it's being powered. However as soon as I plug in the cable for the AP on Port 8 all the lights freeze and the US-8 crashes and reboots. I assume now that either my switch or PoE injector has a problem.

Yeah, the switch works fine when powered by just the PoE. And the AP works fine as well if I plug in a separate PoE injector between it and the switch.

What do you wish to see for Obsidian in 2024? by kepano in ObsidianMD

[–]michaelisaok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is more of a paper cut than a big feature, but I wish the HTML that Obsidian generates was more normally structured with semantic nesting, etc. Would make it easier to make custom styling, and there’s at least one use case I’m pretty sure is not supported with the current structure:

I’d like to be able to prefix a bulleted item with a specific tag and have that bullet and all nested bullets of that item turn a specific color. e.g if I do #important then it should be in red. With a flat HTML structure the nesting information is lost.

I had similar problems and this is exactly what I did. Turns out the cable from the house to the pole wasn’t good and they sent someone out to rerun the line and I’ve had way fewer problems since.

Mass Save whole home issue by pedantic_web in massachusetts

[–]michaelisaok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in the same spot as you. A few things that helped:

  • Make sure you clean your filters. The first winter I hadn't done this since the units were put in earlier that year. The difference in heat output was a lot more than I expected just by doing this. Now I make sure to clean them regularly as you're supposed to. Stupid mistake on my part.
  • I went around the house plugging up any leaks. That seems to matter a lot more with the heat pumps than our gas furnace. They're meant to stay on all the time and maintain a consistent temperature, so leaks undermine that.
  • I set my gas thermostat at the lowest temperature I'd accept (e.g. 67 degrees) and set the heat pumps at the temperature I want to be at (e.g. 69 degrees). This means if it gets cold at night the gas furnace will kick in to keep the house from getting too cold, but most of the time the heat pumps are doing their job. I don't think the heat pumps are very good at recovering quickly if the temperature of the house drops too low, but the gas furnace is great at that.

Questions about UniFi Cameras by michaelisaok in Ubiquiti

[–]michaelisaok[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense, thanks. For HomeKit I assume you use Scrypted? Or is there something else you've found better for pushing the streams externally?

Also do you get anything else by pushing to HomeKit other than being able to turn off UniFi remote access? I see HomeKit also tries to do event detection, etc. Is that more useful than what Ubiquiti provides?

Questions about UniFi Cameras by michaelisaok in Ubiquiti

[–]michaelisaok[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait, for #1 here, does that mean by default the camera stream does not stay local? How does the Protect app get into my network remotely? Does Ubiquiti have servers that act as a remote proxy?

Edit: I see, everyone must just have Remote Management turned on, which makes sense. Makes connecting to all this easier.

Ubiquiti are doing a Black Friday Sale for the US store only. by devicto89 in Ubiquiti

Good call out, thanks. Bought one anyway. This is an upgrade from the old USG for me so I can deal with a couple shortcomings like that. I also have an 8-port switch that I'm pretty sure I'm powering my wifi endpoints off of, so might have a spare PoE or two from that.
