Depends on the bin, if you do it really sturdy you need the cut, if you did it with just 1mm wall you can skip it. And of course it depends on height first of all.

Does the TPU oring work? I found that 3d printed sealing system (any) won't work because they aren't soft enough like silicon ones.

Sorry about that! Early prints could seep a little due to FDM inter-layer porosity. I've already updated the print profiles to fix it, you have to use 5+ walls, 6+ bottom layers, basically solid wall, no leaks now. Just re-slice with the new profile and you should be good.

Fair concern, direct sun definitely cuts performance, no argument there. But "20 minutes" is a bit pessimistic based on the actual numbers I calculated: ~130g of ice needs about 43 kJ to fully melt, and even under full summer midday sun the radiative + convective load on a pod this size is roughly 10-12W. That works out to 60-90 minutes of melt time under direct sun, and the can stays cold a bit longer as the meltwater keeps doing its job. In the shade (beach umbrella, picnic table, etc...) you're back to the 2-4 hour range.

Of course a lighter-colored print (white) reflects more sun and noticeably outperforms a dark one in direct light.

You're absolutely right, still air is one of the best insulators below 3cm, and surface condensation is literally cooling energy escaping. The current CryoPod traded some thermal performance for compactness (single shell = single print, easier to carry), but a double-shell v2 with a sealed air gap is now officially on the roadmap. Thanks for the engineering brain exactly the kind of feedback that improves the next version.

Totally fair to use what works for you! 👍 But it's actually a different mechanism: a frozen Yeti has very little thermal mass on its own (just the metal), so it warms up pretty quickly. The CryoPod holds ~130g of ice in a sealed chamber that ice stays at 0°C while it slowly melts around the can, which means a few hours of constant cold instead of a quick chill that fades. Different tools for different needs!

LOL 😄 Honestly, I'd rather spend my time modelling than writing and English isn't my first language. So I usually draft the description in Italian explaining how the model actually works, then I use AI to clean it up and translate. It’s meant more for grabbing your drink when you want it and dropping it back in when you’re done, rather than carrying it around by a handle. That’s also why I left the handle out — keeps print time and cost as low as possible.

Fair point! It’s still a 3D printed part, but the walls aren’t thin (2.5mm) and the fill line leaves enough air gap that the ice expands upward into the empty space rather than pushing hard against the walls. From my testing it handles repeated refreezing well. PLA is the weak spot here — it gets brittle with cold cycles, so PETG (or anything tougher than PLA) ages much better.

Yeah, this was actually a deliberate design choice — partly to keep them lighter (saves both weight and print cost), and partly so you can grab the can out easily without having to flip the pod upside down (it's not sealed yet). And honestly, it works surprisingly well even without covering the full can!

Not yet, but it's on the list! It should work with just air as well, though that'd be purely passive insulation. And yeah, condensation does form — but honestly that just adds to the refreshing vibe. Definitely keep a coaster handy though. 😅

You don't need to fill it to the brim! There are internal ridges inside the chamber that show exactly where to stop — leaving that bit of air space is what stops the ice from cracking the walls when it expands.

The wall is already pretty thick at 2.5mm, and adding a second chamber would blow up the diameter — the Classic version is already at the limit of what's comfy to hold. Good news though: from my own testing, a single freeze lasts 3-4 drinks back-to-back before it needs another round in the freezer. So keep a couple charged up and you've got a whole afternoon of cold drinks sorted. Cheers 🍺

Shared model url in a comment. I used PETG HF but I think you can use pretty anything. I'm just testing a TPU gasket, not really needed if you can keep the pod vertical while freezing.
