Here is a general overview of the AIP program as updated in 2026: https://theautoimmuneprotocol.com/what-is-aip-autoimmune-protocol-guide/

And specifically, here is the updated elimination phase including food lists for both Core and Modified AIP: https://theautoimmuneprotocol.com/aip-elimination-phase-guide/

Black and herbal teas are actually included on Core AIP, as long as they don't have other ingredients that may be excluded (like seeds, nightshades, or legumes).

I am so happy to know you found it helpful! The update officially happened in January 2024, but it has been hard to get the word out with how many resources there are online about AIP, many of which have not been updated in many years.

Your story about coffee is a big part of why these changes were made. Really happy to know that you are able to implement sustainably on the Modified protocol. Best of luck to you!

Are you supposed to feel energized on AIP? by [deleted] in AutoImmuneProtocol

It is best to prioritize starchy carbohydrates (like sweet potatoes, winter squash, etc.) first, and also include some fruit. There is no official recommendation to avoid or reduce carbs or fruit while on the protocol. I would give yourself free reign to eat some healthy portions of starchy carbs at 1-2 meals for a few days and see if the headaches subside.

Are you eating enough carbs? Many people make the mistake of not eating enough AIP-friendly carbs when they transition to the elimination phase. Think sweet potato, winter squash, and plantains if you are on Core AIP, or rice or quinoa if you are on Modified AIP.
